Goodness they were quick, l only had it done last week. The woman told me I would receive the results in 6 weeks. Anyway all ok, will meet again next year. One less thing on my worry list☺

Cool!

I have noticed the results have been coming a lot quicker over the last couple of years.I don't think I have seen the same screener for years either. I also seem to be seen at different venues despite not moving either house or GP.

OK, I think I can live with that. Odd but hey ho this whole thing is odd. Still waiting (not with great anticipation) for the DESMOND course thingy... Diagnosed in July, GP told me she would get me on this course and eye screening. I contacted her a few weeks ago and asked what is happening, she assured me she had booked me - lo and behold a few days after our chat, I received the eye screening appointment (which I was more concerned about). Still waiting for the other - but from what I have read I don't think I am missing too much and I have picked up loads from the support forum anyway.

Can't comment as I have not been on one, I don't think they had them when I was diagnosed.

Hi (me again)

Just wondered when you reach your goal and get to see the doctor and they want to take you off the Metformin - what are your thoughts? I wonder what if that happens to me -as I would never know what is contributing to the BGLs - diet and metformin, does the body adjust to diet alone? how much does metformin actually assist the process? Of course I can't ask the GP or diabetic nurse as it is impossible to have that sort of sensible chat with them. My last chat with the Diabetes nurse went along lines like this - I went for a flu jab in October and told her I had been diagnosed in July on my birthday and so birthday celebrations were muted. But in October I decided to (wait for it) buy a chocolate eclair (having checked the carbs etc), I cut it half and ate one piece and had the other piece the next day. She could have said nothing - oh no, her response was oh you must be so careful of the fat content. God I just looked at her and left. By the way the eclair was lovely. Lord knows what she would say if she knew that I had two squares of dark chocolate every evening...

Dunno about the Metformin. I'd be in no rush to come off it - no side-effects (so far) and there's a constant flow of studies associating it with anti-inflammatory/anti-oxidant benefits for CV, dementia, cancer, you name it. I doubt doc will be pushing me off it anytime soon. Apart from anything else, I don't think the money issues are the same here in Oz as in the UK - I have to pay the (trivial) cost. But it would be nice to have the option.

The data on effectiveness seems a bit murky - as always, it seems very variable. The best evidence I can find indicates maybe ~10 point reduction for HbA1c on average, but not much about the extent to which that depends on yr base level.

Simplistically, if diet changes, weight reduction, muscle build etc reduce insulin resistance & increase beta cell function, then I guess the relative impact of Metformin would reduce?
