well..... I went out for an Indian meal at my fave restaurant tonight with 7 of my friends.

before meal BG was 5.4 (that is really good for me .. I think coz I'd been out walking

2 hours after the meal 6.7 😱 (unbelieveably low)

doesn't seem right does it? I'll test again in an hour before I go to bed

but this is what I had.....Sanshahi - (lamb and chicken deeply marinated overnight with a host of traditional herbs and spices eg sesame seeds, turmeric, saffron and garam masala) along with 2 veggie side dishes Ghobi Bhazi (cauliflower spring onions and coriander) and Saag Poneer (spinach and Indian cheese)

it was altogether delicious and I didn't feel as though I was missing out at all by not having rice and naan...... and I don't feel bloated like I do with rice and naan 🙂

I tend to get a very high spike but delayed by a couple of hours or so after eating a curry. I usually split my insulin injection for this. Although I have curry with rice and chapatti plus a few beers so probably much higher carb intake.

Hi Macast,
That sounds lovely.🙂
I think you havent spiked because its mostly protein and fat - so hopefully you will stay on a good level all night.🙂Bev

Very wise choices. I would have chosen similarly. I've found I can handle a single roti or half a naan, but no more. And definitely no rice if I have the naan. One thing that is hard to check in all Asian foods - whether sub-continental, SE Asian or Chinese - is the tendency for the cook to use cornflour/cornstarch as a thickener. That can add a lot of carbs to sauces.

Try some tests one hour after meals. You may get some surprises. I explain why in more detail here (click on the coloured text): Test, Review, Adjust

Hi Macast,
I think your sensible choices paid off.
I did the same the other night with my mixed grill and half a naan and figures were reasonable.
Well done on being good and hope the weigh in this week rewards you too!

Hi Macast

Sounds really good and great that your numbers remained so low after the meal. You obviously have been doing your homework and chose very wisely. I think one of the best things we can do, is stock up our store cupboards with as many interesting herbs and spices, vinegars. One of favourite things to do with meat, is to marinade as you get fantastic flavours without feeling deprived.

Unfortunately, we don't have many good Indian restaurants in the part of Norway where we live, so I have to compromise.

Low GI/GL foods and constant testing is the way to go, well for me, anyway!

Glad you enjoyed your meal.

Donna x🙂

BG rose to 7.6 before bed and was 7.0 this morning

before meal BG was 5.4
2 hours after the meal 6.7
3 hours after the meal 7.6
next morning 7.0

so I'm very happy to report that I will not be avoiding my fave Indian restaurant from now on 😉

Those are great readings!!

The thought of curry is making my mouth water mmm mmm mmm 😛

Must admit I love Curry and am waiting for my Birthday before going and having one - I'm counting the weeks away.

I have to admit tho I still have rice and have a chipati when I eat in a restaurant. I make my own curry's once a month with paratha's. But not the same as curry house - well except mine are my healthy - no gee

Just goes to show there's no such thing as food to avoid, just careful choices and portion control.

Moving to Food section now.

oooh sorry Copepod..... I put it in the wrong section😱

Hi Macast - no need to apologise, as you didn't do anything wrong 🙂
Lots of people post in the General Messageboard, as it gets the most visits, but posts in more specialised sections tend to stay top for longer.

I've always loved Indian cuisine, having lived there briefly during one of dad's postings. Since being diagnosed I've given up the naan and the rice but still have my favourite dishes and it's never seemed to send me high. Which is good, because I have at least one Indian meal a week. I'm dreaming of Prawn Dopiaza now.

Great numbers, and once again, I'm jealous.

couldn't you just have plain boiled basmati rice?

and whilst we're on indian food - is a dhansak likely to be ok?

what about a deep fried mars bar, in a french stick?
