I thought I'd share this in case it helps other 'rookies' like me. Dinner in a restaurant as a treat tonight. I perused the menu on line to work out carbs in advance. Did a BG test at the table. (I am a diabetic not a weirdo - to people staring). Felt proud of myself for that. So far so good. Waited for the starter to arrive then injected insulin. Only problem was there was an hour and a half gap between the starter and the main course. Understandable, in retrospect because we're only just out of lockdown, staff pressures etc. However, instead of having a nice relaxing time waiting for the main course I had to retest and take some dextrose to avoid a hypo. Husband trying to distract me with making polite conversation which was a little weird. Ended up with a BG a little higher than hoped due to extra dextrose. In the future I'm going to inject when I see the main course. Ho hum. I avoided falling off my chair so all good and lesson learnt

No end to.learning with D. Although I do like the idea of your husband making polite conversation to distract you.

Yes, definitely delay or split your bolus and never inject until your food is in front of you! I hope you still enjoyed your meal despite that.

Oh boy did that fetch back memories lol.

You’re not alone
Went out to a nearby well known chain restaurant, ordered and as till then they were always quite quick serving meals so after 10 minutes I bolussed , I tend not to have a starter . Well after half an our or so I asked what was the delay, turned out their were only two chefs in and the restaurant was packed, cue , full sugar coke , dextrose tabs and much testing. I can’t remember what my BGs were after.

Thanks @Inka . Splitting bolus is a new one to me. Will follow that one up. Meal was great despite the period of internal drama thanks

Waiter brings plate of main course food - NOW I bolus! - including however much the starter which I've already eaten may have required.

Same for a pud - not until it's in front of me.

Recently I test and correct after I've eaten

We don't eat out much- even before covid. Recent meal in restaurent ( Tapas)- first meal out in 15 or 16 months.
I remember about 3 years ago deciding that we would go for an impromtu pub meal after a busy day at work. Literally about 5 minutes walk from our house. Ordered jacket potato and as these are like sugar bombs I took the risk of pre bolusing ( double risk as assumed would be large and as I like these I wanted to eat it all and reasoned to myself that if smaller than expected I could have a dessert or some orange juice). Order took a long time to arrive and when it arrived it was fries ( large portion). My other half was about to ask them to change it. With X units of novorapid on board which were injected about 30 minutes before, I nearly killed him!. I ate the chips, enjoyed them and survived!

Hi @Jennyninja thanks for liking my post - what do you think about doing it this way?
I guess it depends on how long dinner takes with all the delays that are out of our control. I've not done it and I guess if it's dinner the effect of the Insulin could be later when you're asleep and maybe cause a hypo. But hey - I'm new to all of this so I take on board everyone's views.
