For some reason I thought insulin promoted fat gain and that it could be particular to the abdomen

No, I think you’ve got confused with insulin resistance. People with insulin resistance often produce more insulin than they need and this excess insulin can lead to weight gain. Type 1s only inject the insulin they need. The two processes are very different, as are the two types of diabetes.
 
If anything, i am slimmer now i am on insulin than before. Probably cos i snack less, cos eating is a wee bit less spontaneous.
If it did, t1s would all have earth-mother type thighs
