Been 15 years and not had mine checked more than about twice. It should be done annually by a nurse or HCP at the GP surgery usually though.
Mine are checked probably every nine months to a year when I’m in seeing the nurse.

All phone appointments here not in person

Was wondering what people do in terms of getting their feet checked by a podiatrist/chiropodist. NHS or private? And how often you do it. Thanks all.
Mine are checked annually. I also see a podiatrist every 10 weeks, because I had multiple operations on my toes in my teens (unfortunate side effect of ballet lessons!!). I go private because during lockdown, when my regular podiatrist closed, I was told there was a 9 month wait for an NHS podiatrist. I luckily found one who specialised in home visits for the elderly/those with walking difficulties.

Found out this morning that my HbA1c is 64 and my blood glucose was 14.9. Not sure what to make of all that. Hopefully hear from GP this week about appointment

That is not too bad, not as bad as some people here started off at. The HbA1C is and average over the previous 3 months and is the test used for diagnosis, anything over 47mmol/mol is diabetic.
The 14.9mmol/l would have been a spot test which is the level at that moment in time and is certainly a lot higher than you want it to be. The levels to aim at once diagnosed are 4-7mmol/l fasting and before meals and no more than 8.5mmol/l 2 hours post meal
The more consistently you are within those ranges the more likely your HbA1C will be in the normal range of below 42mmol/mol.

Your HbA1c is at a level where medication is usually prescribed. With a pre-existing heart condition as well you might also be offered statins, if not already on them. Metformin is the first medication usually offered, but it can come with bowel and stomach side effects. If they don't settle, a slow release version can be requested. But lifestyle changes are the best thing you can do to help yourself.

Hi Felina, hope you're well. Yeah I've to get statins for the heart issue but not got them yet. Once I hear from GP I'll know if I've to get metformin or something else. I've cut out sugar and carbs from my diet and wont be drinking any alcohol either. Asked for referral to dietician too. Basically its been salad/veg/lean meat since last wednesday.

I've just recovered from a nasty eye infection and COVID, having managed to avoid it up to now!! Spent several hours in the garden today now I've got my energy back, and will be back in the pool tomorrow. That's where I get my exercise 2/3 times a week.
What ever you choose to do about your diet, it needs to be sustainable. As you've realised you are best advised to be careful with carbs, but if you cut too drastically too quickly, it can cause eye problems. The suggestion is less than 130gm a day, with trial and error to find out what suits your body best. I settled on 75gm - 90gm a day, which allows me the occasions small slice of bread, or a couple of new potatoes. Testing showed me I can cope with that. I use substitutes for potato, rice and pasta, for example roasted squash, soybean pasta, cauliflower, ribboned veggies.
I also have the occasional treat, but plan in advance for that. It's my birthday soon, and we will be going for a Chinese with beansprouts instead of rice for me!

I love swimming. I live next to a heated outdoor pool so will def be doing a bit more of that to increase activity levels. I've stocked up on veg and thankfully I like all veg. Some turkey breasts, pork steaks and chicken in freezer. Might treat myself to a steak at weekend. I dont have an overly sweet tooth but of course now that I am avoiding sugary stuff, I suddenly feel like a creme egg lol. I dont know soyabean pasta so will check that out. I was looking at cauliflower rice online earlier, will get some of that. Saw a recipe for Almond bread on sugarfreelondoner site which think i'll try https://sugarfreelondoner.com/almond-flour-bread-keto-bread-recipe/

I use edamame bean or black bean pasta much lower carb than normal, You can just buy a cauliflower and grate or chop finely then you can use the rest for cauliflower cheese.

Yes true... I'll buy a big cauliflower. I luv dry fried cauliflower with cumin. I put a lid over the pan and just let the cut up cauliflower steam in its own juice, the sprinkle the cumin over when about 5 mins to go... very tasty (if you like cauliflower and cumin). Spent this evening looking through the sugarfreelondoner site which I found out about on here. Great recipes on there.

Must try that. I like cauliflower, squash and chickpea curry, add paneer, halloumi or boiled egg.
