Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
I was diagnosed with type 2 (hbA1c 55) just before Christmas after having pre-op testing having just been diagnosed with breast cancer.

My GP rang me the day after the letter arrived from the hospital and my appointment with the practice diabetes nurse was organised for a week after my cancer surgery on January 12th. I was already following a low carb diet when I met her and had my own BG monitor to work out how much carb was too much. I was given a monitor she preferred - wavelength jazz and a prescription for 50 strips a month. The jazz strips cost twice the price of the gluconavii strips. The jazz also regularly measures my bg up to two points higher than my gluconavii. I tested both monitors for a few days each time I measured and they rarely agreed! I have lost 6kg in January and my bg is mostly reading between 5.2 and 7.5.(on the gluconavii)
I’ve also just had a letter inviting me to an online diabetes education course

My GP agreed that I could try controlling my diabetes with diet alone and my cancer consultant has said a point blank no to any diabetes drugs. I’m waiting on some extra tests as my cancer turned out to be more aggressive than first thought so may need chemo along with radiotherapy and hormone treatment so I really don’t want more tablets. This had made me very determined to succeed with diet alone.

I have learnt so much these last few weeks just reading the forum. Some great advice and suggestions. Thank you.

Hi @Lowen and welcome to the forum. Glad we have been of help to you. Also seems like you are in good hands with your medical team.

Most, probably all, of us would agree that getting your HbA1c from 55 down to sub diagnosis levels is perfectly feasible by working on what you eat. So keep reading and if anything is unclear then ask questions. There is always somebody around to help.

Welcome to the forum @Lowen . I am glad that you have already found the various posts useful.

It is good to hear that you have an effective health care team around you, and also the determination to tackle both the problems that you are dealing with at present.

Keep in touch and ask any questions that you have.
There is plenty of experience to tap into on here.

Welcome to the forum @Lowen - and thanks for ‘de-lurking’ :D

Sorry to hear about your cancer, but well done on the determination to tackle your diabetes head-on. Sounds like you are off to a flying start!

It’s not all that uncommon for different brands of meters to have a slightly different reaction to the same blood samples, though by law all have to offer results within a margin of error from a lab test.

There’s a table of values showing the possible spread of results at the bottom of this post
