Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I am currently doing an apprenticeship in business and admin at a the hospital in walsall. I have been with the diabetic secretaries ( oh the irony) and they have just completed the annual audit on diabetic inpatients. I spent the whole day photocopying the forms which took forever but I found it very interesting.

Out of 82 patients only two were type 1, and most of the type 2's were medicated. I hear all the time that there are more type 2's than 1 but this kinda brought home the point. Nearly all were over the age of 70 as many are being treated by elderly care and not the diabetes service. I dont recall coming across a patient who was admitted with DKA either!

Its nice to know were not alone. I do feel like I have rattled on here for a fair bit lol 🙂

That's very interesting Emily, and it does tend to bring home how relatively rare Type 1 is - here on the forum we're about 50:50!

I think it something like 5% type 1s overall. But because of the nature of the illness compared to type 2s they are far more likely to participate in forums such as this and real world support groups so it gives the impression they are more numerous.

Another interesting stat which the paediatric diabetes consultant revealed in her talk the other week was that out of approx 400 diabetic children in Leeds there were only 20 type 2s and virtually all of those were of Asian ethnic origin.

Am I right in thinking that Asian origin increases the risk of type 2 ?

I grew up in an area with a large Asian community and the diabetes clinic was always overflowing with middle-aged to elderly people, a large % of whom were Asian. Obviously back in the 70s/80s it was just put down to sweet and fatty foods but I'm sure there's a genetic link.

Yeah if you are of South Asian, African-Caribbean or Middle Eastern descent your more likely to get D

I'm grateful for my robust Anglo-Saxon genes for once! :D

Wait a minute. My pancreas is broken. Flippin' Anglo-Saxons !! 😡
