Simple question really, is a good T2D diabetic diet not compatible with a good diet to avoid kidney stones?
In the past I have had several kidney stones, all passed naturally.
The 1st one was large (10mm x5mm) which did smart a bit! and it took about six months to pass, and despite an ultrasound, CT scan and Xray, they did not spot it....and it hurt like hell!
Subsequently, I've had about 4 or five other stones, but all much smaller and less painful.
Have not had any stones for about 2years or so.
On Monday I woke up at 4am with the now easily recognisable "pains", I was doubled up for hours, then it subsided. I am 90% sure its another kidney stone on the way, oh joy....
So I refreshed myself on what one should try to avoid in the diet to minimise kidney stones from forming.
Quick google threw up a list - Things to avoid include:
Nuts, especially almonds, some berries, meat protein, (especially red meat), meat organs/offall, strawberries, Celery, fish, eggs, cheese, cauliflower, mushrooms, etc.
All the above are things I now eat more of, due to taking on a low carb diet, eg: celery, berries, meat and poultry, eggs, cheese, most above ground veg and lots of mushrooms, etc.
NB: I had already lowered my salt intake due to high BP, years ago, so rarely add salt to anything. And I make sure I drink plenty of water every day, ever since 1st being diagnosed with stones, (sometimes taken with lemon juice, as advised by my Nethrology Consultant at the time).
If I minimise all the above foods, to minimise kidney stones, that will severely restrict my diet for everything else!
If its not one thing, its summit else, Bah! 8-(
