Up at 4am this morning...couldn't sleep...off to my DESMOND course this morning...five months after DX...not looking forward to it...feeling resentful surrendering a whole day for this...call me ungrateful (don't please rhetorical comment)...but not sure why I am attending...I still have a lot to learn about my 'dire betty'...however not sure a course covering the basics so long after DX will teach me a great deal...possibly only going so I am not labelled non compliant...or to repair my so far disappointing relationship with GP who feels I may still pick up a few tips

So far on this journey the only place I have picked up a few tips is here...in fact it's been a real life saver.

Not feeling 'IT' this morning...still... plenty of time to comb my hair...make my packed lunch...dress smartly...arrive on good time...feels like the first day at school (can just remember that).

Hi Bubbsie. I think you're likely to find yourself among people who feel similar to you. Some may become good friends. As for the course you are bound to find out some good thingsas well as that eat well plate 😡 . I'm around 22 years in and still learning from the guys and gals here. It's been 59 years since my first day at school , I tried to escape , the classroom door had to be locked to keep me in 😱

Think I may just be tired Ljc...been a round of clinics...GPs...hospital appointments...and so on... with more to come in a couple of weeks...yes...must try to be positive...got to be something there for me...looking forward to seeing the infamous 'eat well' plate...hopefully they won't have to lock the classroom door to keep me in...that made me laugh...just dread the thought of being told what I am doing is wrong...GP and INR clinic both not in favour of LCHF...testing...in fact negative comments from both...from the results I've had so far it's working for me at the moment...only a day...can't really critique until I've done it...friend going with me...also type 2...she's 5 years in and never been offered a course...so should be grateful.

Hi Bubbsie, I am sure some of it will be useful, when I did mine about 3 months after being diagnosed I was horrified that
So many people attending who had been diabetic for years had so little knowledge.
I had to give 2 of them some of my Glucose tablets as they started having hypos just after the coffee break!
One girl was telling us she took her morning insulin and did not eat afterwards! She was one of the tablet recipients and did not turn up for the next 2 sessions which was very sad as she obviously needed it the most.

Good luck

Hope the day turns out better than you expect Bubbsie 🙂 As @Ljc says, you may meet some really nice people, which can be one of the best things about these courses, regardless of content 🙂 Be confident that what you are doing is working for you, I imagine you will already be a step ahead of your fellow attendees, so if you feel the need do not be afraid to argue your case and challenge theirs if you feel they are giving out outdated advice 🙂

I look forward to hearing how things go! 🙂

Hi Ruby...as said taking a friend with me who is five years diagnosed...since my DX we have discussed how best to manage our diabetes...I am amazed how little she knows...over the years her medication has been increased...then increased again.so will try my best to approach it objectively...report back later...hopefully with some good news.

I forgot to mention the very large man who had been diabetic 9 years and knew hardly anything about it, undoing his shirt and proceeding to inject his large hairy stomach about 3 times, in front of us during the coffee break!

Thanks Northerner...not sure I have the energy or inclination to challenge today...just frustrates me I have had no 'real' support from my health care providers so far...had it not been for this forum...would still be wondering around in a daze...or complete ignorance...now five months later....just a bit 'johnny come lately' for me...yes...would be good to discuss how others approach and manage their diabetes...meet new people...ooh and can tell you all about it tomorrow...bet you can't wait for that!

OMG Ruby...thanks for sharing that...did I mention I haven't had breakfast yet:D...a vivid image of that hairy stomach has just flashed in front of me...will keep that image in my mind...could be useful!

Oh the very thought of witnessing that, I was just about to have brekky too

Hope it is better than you think, can't offer any words of wisdom as not been on any education courses.
Though went to peer support group that is being trailed Type 2 Together, only went twice as group only small. As the third one happened on one of the last sunny days in autumn, I spent the time doing gardening.

Hope it goes well Bubbsie. The most I've had is a 1/2 hour with the diabetic dietician who read out a 3 page leaflet to me about carb counting. As she gave me the leaflet at the end, she could have just sent me it and saved us all the trouble🙄. It told me nothing I didn't already know from this forum. I have another one to look forward to in mid Dec re "eating out". What joy to look forward to.......o_O🙂

Let us know how it goes I have a letter here about attending one of these courses but haven't rang the appropriate people yet! So would be interesting to find out what its all about x

Yes, let us know what you think of it, @Bubbsie - I went on one quite a while after diagnosis, and found some of it useful, but other stuff was not so good (the dreaded 'eat well plate' mentioned upthread 🙄)

This place has been far more educational and illuminating!

Have posted an update...if you are keen on attending this course I would not recommend reading it!

Grovesy your time was better spent gardening...

When I did Desmon last year it was OK. Gave some background. Rusty locks (insulin resistance). I consider it an introduction.
