Sorry I'm late posting. Fingers crossed its what has been previously detected x

Hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about 🙂

Just seen this thread. Hopefully it will be nothing to worry about Alan.
Good luck at the eye clinic.

I've only just seen this thread Alan and I wish you all the best with this and hope it is just them being cautious!

will you manage London on Saturday?

I wish you all the very best Alan, hope all goes well xxxx😉

Well, I have got my appointment through and it's not until late June. There was a leaflet with it about diabetic maculopathy and it says I will have a scan called an OCT scan - this is apparently like a normal retinal scan but 3-D. I'm not sure if this is what they gave me in the past. The scan will then be reviewed and there will be one of 4 possible outcomes:

  • referral back to ordinary retinal screening (yes please!)
  • follow-up in the clinic after 4 m0nths (hmm...)
  • referral to diabetic retinal clinic for further assessment
  • referral to a laser treatment clinic (hopefully not!)

Then there is a bit that says 'What can I do to help my eyes?'

  • Keep your diabetes well-controlled (tick!)
  • Keep your blood pressure well-controlled (tick!)
  • Keep your cholesterol controlled (tick!)
  • Stop smoking (did that 18 years ago!)

So it doesn't look like there is anything in my armoury that I can improve, I will just have to hope for the best 🙂

I'm very frustrated on your behalf because they should be able to do the OCT scan as part of a retinal appointment at the eye department rather than you having to wait for the outcome. Three times when I've been to the retinal clinic they've done it there and then - each time the machine wasn't being used by anyone else and it was operated by a nurse - whichever clinic nurse was available. Ok that's my rant bit over:D. Basically the OCT scan shows lots of pretty colours showing whether your macula is swollen (macula odema) and, if it is, the amount of the swelling. With what I know now about my macula if I received such a letter I would see someone privately ASAP - if it's clear then great nothing to worry about. If the news isn't so good then it can be dealt with ASAP before it causes more damage. I don't say this because I can easily afford private treatment, I can't now that I don't work, but I know how difficult it is dealing with macula problems if they are not resolved quickly enough.

It's possible they will do it all at the appointment Amanda, when I have been to the Eye department before I have seen a consultant straight after having the scan done and they have looked at my eyes in more detail at the time, then a 6 month follow-up.

I hope that happens this time Alan and that they then refer you back to the annual retinal screening. I did have laser on my macula for something not related to the problem that affected my sight, and the laser didn't hurt at all. That was two years ago and no problems with that particular issue since then.

Thanks for the reassurance Amanda 🙂 I think it might just be down to a difference of opinion between consultants as I saw two different ones when I was last there.
