Hi, am new to all this carb counting and today I went to the supermarket to get the ingredients for the yummy looking gammon and pineapple stirfry that I saw in the recipe section on this site. While I was shopping I saw dried egg noodles on offer, normal and wholemeal. Naturally I thought the wholemeal would be have lower carbs but when I compared the labels I was surprised to find the regular noodles were less in carbs than the wholemeal. What is the rule of thumb when it comes to white or wholemeal food options.

Generally, the carbs don't vary that much between wholemeal & white versions of food. The increased fibre can help slow the carbs down. Don't know why the wholemeal noodes have more carbs than the normal one. All I can think of is that something carby has been added to them to make them more palatable.

I read the label before I put it the basket. 🙂. You cant tell how much sugar is in manufactured food. Its the only way with some foods.

I just looked at my packet of egg noodles (Sainsburys) and noticed that the nutritional info given is for the cooked weight. I wonder if the normal and the wholemeal start off with roughly the same carbs when dried, but the normal absorb more water while they're cooking, so they have fewer carbs per 100g after cooking, simply because they weigh more overall. (Just a theory)
I hate it when they do that, I much prefer to know the carbs for the dry weight, so I can weigh them before cooking.

I found some fish noodles in the fresh veg section in Sainsbury's yesterday and made a stir fry last night. They were only 6.5 grams of carbs per hundred. Tasted just like normal noodles

Another on my list for when I get back.🙂

Hmm this has really intrigued me, although I don't have a Sainsbury's I will see if there's any info on the website! :D xx

Have foraged in the bin for the packaging, they are called Oomi and are fish protein noodles 6.1 g per 100 🙂

😳 you shouldn't have done that for our benefits!! Thanks though! :D
I take it they were nice? xx

They tasted just like the egg noodles, despite being made out of fish!

To be honest I don't think I've ever even had egg noodles! HAHA x
