I’ve read up all the information I can my DSN said I have to inform DVLA no matter how long I’m on insulin. Yet DVLA say only if I’m going to be on Insulin more than 3 months. If all goes well they are hoping to stop my insulin end of June making it 10/11 weeks on insulin. I’m going to phone DVLA help line Monday to make sure I do the right thing. Heart rehab said 4 weeks before I can drive DVLA say 1 week if you have Angoplasty (think that’s how it’s Spelt) and it’s successful mine was but I’m sticking to the 4 weeks to be on the safe side.

Well yes Spirelite - if your own medical advisor tells you something different, then providing you don't think they are being utterly ridiculous (cos sadly some of em are with some things) it's advisable to follow what they say rather than 'generic' advice on a website, since that isn't specific to you personally.

As long as you 'test test test' and follow the rules re driving after hypos etc, you do sound reasonable - but whther that cuts any ice legally with DVLA/Police I haven't a clue.

Phoned DVLA sending me a form out to fill in said if all the information I’ve provided is correct it shouldn’t affect my full license such a relief it’s been playing on my mind since diagnosis and nice to finally get it sorted. Looked online at insurance as mine is up very soon and need diabetic cover now I can get it cheaper than my current cover thought it would be a lot more.

Sensible approach Spiriette...always double check these things.

It must be a great relief...we're quite rural here...no idea what I'd do without being able to drive...better to make sure you are adhering to the regulations...then double check again.

Tell you what, Spireite, spellchecker is playing havoc with your username. Is that an away shirt you’re wearing in your photo?:D

Yes couple of seasons ago now though my name is Wayne if it makes it easier 🙂

Not a problem for me, Wayne. Mind you, Accie Stanley are my second team. Different fortunes this season, for you, sadly.:(

It was coming for the last 3 years mismanagement from the owners one mess to the next. Just can’t see anything getting better until we can find new ownership.

Got my paperwork from DVLA filled it all in but nothing on it about how long insulin is been used or when it is likely to stop. Even though there official guides say I didn’t have to inform DVLA if on insulin less than 3 months which I will be if everything goes to plan. Hopefully the doctors report will cover this.

Why do you need a doctors report?
It says on the form they will need to speak to my doctors and get a report before they can give me a decision on my license.

On the plus side I’ve been told I’m ok to drive as long as I follow any and all medical advice while it’s been sorted.

Hi Spireite - the guidance around driving with insulin and other medications is pretty confusing with lots of varying scenarios. Sometimes, HCP may not be aware of all the exceptions, understandably, as there is a lot.
There is a document for HCP to guide them with driving queries: Assessing Fitness to Drive
It's a big document, but many of us here at Diabetes UK have pretty much memorized pages 68-75... :D

Page 72 has the Guidelines regarding Temporary Insulin, in case you needed clarification.
It sounds like you have your application in process now with the DVLA so hopefully all will be fine - but if you do have any more queries, or need clarification with the DVLA forms, feel free to get in touch. Our Helpline answer quite a lot of queries to clarify confusion with the DVLA guidance 🙂

Thank you for that it’s very helpful

Not very happy I've met all requirements to keep my full licence on insulin less than 3 months Metformin and Diet only in 6 weeks from diagnosis but they want to put me on a 3yr medical licence. Going to phone not sure if I can appeal or not. If I had followed their rules I didn't even have to inform them. :(😡

Just reading my licence conditions are now contradictory I now legally have to test my bloods 2hrs before driving when medically I don't have to test at all. I have to be above 5 as you've all seen my bloods are seldom above 5 anytime of day. Again medically I don't have to test at all now. Getting so stressed out aarrggg

Why do you have to test? Is it 2 hrs before driving or no more than 2 hrs (that is, if it's more than 2 hours, you have to test)?

Spireite are the DVLA aware you have stopped taking insulin?...just a thought...I think you do need to speak to them to get some clarity.
