So cutting down carbs is working nicely and levels coming from down nicely. However today I had porridge (oats half milk half water) and berries, then I had my tea at lunch as my daughter was home and going to work at 3 so we had some minced tacos and lots of salad (reduced fat mince and wholemeal tacos). Went for a walk and went shopping got back at 5 felt shaky checked levels and dropped from 12 to 5. Soo hard trying to stop sugar and carbs yet I've found twice now I've dropped quite quickly in such a short space of time! Any advice would be good.

Cutting down on carbs is a good thing. I have porridge nearly every day & keeps me happy till well after lunch time & that's when I am at work. From a T1 for more than 50 odd years. Good luck 🙂

Thank you Hobie I love porridge but so much conflicting advice so I try to mix my breakfasts up by having eggs some mornings.

Are you on any medication? What's your FBG like? I have a couple of ideas...

Not what I was expecting but our bodies can react in the strangest ways, particularly if we changing things up somewhat.... Personally I woke to a 77 this morning having got back to my typical Low Carb diet (after being somewhat more relaxed while in Tamp over the last 5 weeks), also while in Tampa I found that I had to increase my carb intake as I felt low in the mornings (I live in the mountains of Southern California) so there was a significant timezone/climate change.

My suggestion would be to repeat the "Test" taking readings before & after your meal (2 hr) & see what happens; I think that the body may have over produced insulin reacting to a large spike after the meal, testing can lead more credence to that theory.

Ah sorry I think I was confused I test using a blood glucose monitor and strips from the doctors which tests my glucose levels. Supposed to be in the range of between 4 and 8 I think and mine were 20 when I was first diagnosed. Been on meds for 2 weeks now and it's coming down slowly but today it really dropped. I'm wondering if I'm not eating enough or what's going on as I've literally changed my whole diet the day I was diagnosed.

We holiday in Florida and I'm a bit nervous the next time we go as I just love eating out over there!!

Hitting a 5 in 2 weeks will definitely be a shock, but it's time to start testing to see what foods affect you. At those levels you would be having a False Hypo (as your body is not used to BG that low) it can feel bad but real hypo's are way worse. A suggestion is to carry glucose tablets & if you start feeling a little off then pop one of them. Wildly swinging BG's are not good for the body, even BG's are

I would guess that having your tea at lunchtime was the cause of the unexpected drop - I find if I swop my meals round my blood sugar is all over the place (I have to work out my insulin doses differently for different times of day).

But as Martin says, at the moment you're going to feel ill at 5 because your body is used to higher levels, so if it happens again and you get shaky just eat a small amount of something carby (dried fruit would work too, or a jelly baby). In time you'll find that your blood sugar becomes more level and you'll feel healthier at 5, but it does take a little while.

Making low carb choices to replace the foods you are eating now should make a big difference.
By eating high carb - particularly early in the day when many people are more insulin resistant means that you have prolonged exposure to high levels of blood glucose, then exercise, or simply the passing of time results in all the insulin you have produced in response finally taking effect and your BG level drops rapidly and makes you feel wobbly.
Grains such as oats and wheat are really high carb and changing to foods with 10 percent carbs or fewer should be a great help.

Thanks Martin it's a steep learning curve at the moment

Thank you it's just finding out what works for me at the moment just don't know what I did wrong yesterday

Nothing wrong, just the nature of the beast, I will warn you that your numbers are likely to be all over the place at first as you start to bring your BG levels down. Take each day as it comes...
