Hi all- I've just got the word that I may be prediabetic. I've been checking out diet and am a bit confused.
No 1-- I used to eat Greek yoghurt 10% fat at night, but changed to 0% recently. Aldi variety. Then I read that the high fat is actually better because it might have higher protein.
Number 2. I eat some dried fruits- dates, figs - as snacks whenever I feel hunger pangs. Again I'm getting conflicting advice- good for high fibre, but bad for sugar.??

I would be very grateful for any views on this subject. Thanking you all.

🙂 Welcome @Twende. Dried fruit is quite high in sugar/carbs. Better snacks would be foods lower in carbs eg a Babybel, cold chicken or similar, nuts, cucumber, tomatoes, etc.

The full fat Greek yoghurt is often lower in carbs and keeps you feeling fuller longer.

Just to be clear, it’s all carbs you need to be aware of, not just sugary ones.

Hi.

I am type 2 and eat Aldis greek Yoghurt too which is fine for me but I do weigh out 20-30gsm and have it with a chopped banana or berries for brekky 🙂 lots of fruits can be high in sugar or carbs but you can eat these in moderation, you can pretty much eat anything at all without spiking your bloods as long as you're not eating too much of it at a time. I suppose its all about qty's at the end of the day.
Good luck though and I'm sure you will get loads of good advice from here.

You may find some good explanation that is straightforward in this link https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
As you are only prediabetic then some modest changes in your dietary regime will most likely be sufficient.
It is important to recognise the high carb foods so you can make better food choices.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a useful resource as it gives carb values of a whole range of foods related to portion size.
Becoming familiar with the TOTAL carbohydrate content of foods by looking at the nutritional info on the packets etc as different brands of the same food can very considerably.

Wife continued to eat fruit when told she was prediabetic, not dried but fresh fruit which is probably better for you.

She went on to reverse diagnosis by weight loss with help of local slimming group, so did switch from full fat greek yogurt to 0% fat, taste wise not much difference same with carb value.

Sorry to hear you’ve been getting a little confused by the different advice around foods.

I’d certainly steer clear of dried fruits for snacks - they have enough easily accessible carbohydrate to make a fairly effective hypo treatment for me, so I’d imagine they’d provide a pretty hefty bump in your BGs.

Over the years I’ve found the effect of fibre to have less impact on the absorption of carbs by my body than some sources suggest. So I do have wholewheat options, but still keep an eye on their total carbohydrate content and don’t rely on the fibre to slow the carbs down much. Good for my digestive health though.
