It's chinese takeaway night tonight and as some members know I do love my chicken fried rice but for weighing purposes I'm never sure which one to go with on carbs and cals. Any help with this would be appreciated and I apologise if I've asked this question before.

This is something you have a lot so why not just use the same carb estimate you used last time?

When did you have it last? Check your MySugr to see how many carbs you estimated it as and how that worked for your blood sugar. If it worked well use the same. If it didn’t work well either estimate a bit more or less carbs accordingly.

I use different carb amounts every time because it depends how much I have of it to eat. It's just whether I should be going with the ordinary egg fried rice or special fried rice.

I tend to work off egg fried rice being 1/3 carbs (as said in carbs and cals) so I just weigh the portion and divide by 3. That works for us. You might need a slightly different ratio. But if you have it semi regularly knowing the carbs per 100g or the ratio is helpful. I don’t think it makes much difference if it’s special fried or egg fried.

Thank you this is what I was wondering.

I usually weigh my first lot and eat that then have seconds so weigh that out - from the large foil container there isn't a lot left - then I inject after eating

Which photo do you usually go from?

It doesn’t matter which picture you use, it works out all the same. From each of your pictures, work out the carbs divided by the weight. 18/55=0.32. 57/170=0.33. 93/280=0.33. So the carbs are exactly 1/3 of the total weight. Which makes it dead easy, weigh the cooked portion and divide by 3. I do that for all rice dishes actually, even if I just do plain rice on the side with something I’ve cooked at home, I don’t even bother to look at the packet any more and it seems to work. Make your life as simple as you can!

The total amount of carbs may be different if you eat a different portion size but you can use the same method for calculating it. It doesn’t matter if it’s accurate or not just learn from how it worked last time.

…just learn from how it worked last time.

Exactly that! I never bother weighing takeaway rice. With a Chinese it’s all a bit academic anyway, as I like to have some of a number of dishes plus prawn crackers. So what I do is have a similar portion of the rice/fried rice each time. That way I roughly know what insulin dose works. It’s not much of a treat if you have to fuss about weighing everything.

If I wanted extra rice from my normal portion, I’d just calculate the percentage of my normal portion extra I was having eg if I normally have half a foil box and take 3 units of insulin for that, then I decide I want a bit more rice, I’ll purposely choose either the whole half left in the foil or half of that half. That way I know how much insulin to have - either another 3 units if I’m eating all the other half of the box, or another 1 and 1/2 units if I’m only eating half of the remaining half in the box.

All the fried rice things are basically the same so I don’t bother differentiating. When the other 42 things that can affect your blood sugar are waiting to kick in, it makes little difference to estimate a rice portion, as long as your estimate is sensible. Write down how much rice you had (by portion of the box), your insulin dose and whether it worked. That way you can just look at your notebook next time and repeat. I tend to remember my doses but a notebook is helpful if you don’t.

Would I tell my bolus advisor I'm having 32g of carbs and not 18g

33g of carbs not 57g of carbs

33g of carbs not 93g
Yes if you are eating 100g. No if you are eating a different weight.

Weight you eat divided by 100 multiplied by 33.

Or as Sally says above, weight you eat divided by 3 will be near enough the same and easy to remember.

On carbs and cals if I weigh my rice then enter the weight in the custom weight box then press done

173g comes up as 58g of carbs so that would be 58÷173 = 0.33....

182g comes up as 61g of carbs so that would be 61÷182 = 0 33.....

You’ve got the sums muddled, I think @mum2westiesGill

…as Sally says above, weight you eat divided by 3 will be near enough the same and easy to remember.

^^This is the easiest way to do it.

My own weight when weighed on the scales of 173g ÷ 3 = 57.6........

My own weight when weighed on the scales of 182g ÷ 3 = 60.6.......So would it be 60g of carbs I would need to enter into my bolus advisor?

Yes that's right, just weigh it and divide by 3 and enter that as your carb value, job done then you can get on with enjoying your meal 🙂

58g carbs ÷ 173 my weight × 173 my weight = 58g of carbs

61g of carbs ÷ 182 my weight × 182 & 61g of carbs

@mum2westiesGill Those sums are just reversing the same operation. You don’t need to do that. Simply take the weight of your rice and divide it by 3 to get the carb value. An easy example: your rice weight is 90g. You divide 90 by 3. That equals 30 - ie 30g carbs.

90g rice weight divided by 3 = 30g carbs

Thank you to everyone who has replied and I apologise for my thickness.
I don’t think it makes much difference if it’s special fried or egg fried.
In future I know to go with either and whatever weight of rice I'm having divided by 3........now what to have for tea.......scampi lol
