Carb Manager & eating out

I didn’t mean brown bread , pasta and rice all in one day. Just limit them to spread them out over time. I wouldn’t have rice and pasta all in one day. I have been told by so called experts that Weetabix and shredded wheat are fine as is porridge and blueberries together. All measured portions. I have cut out all cakes , pastries , biscuits , choc etc and lost weight doing so. Don’t drink or use sugar in drinks so if I can’t have all the things you’ve mentioned as well then what am I supposed to eat as I have a healthy appetite plus a big walker.
Just had a thought - if you like bread you could make your own. I got a flaxseed bread recipe off here and also an almond flour bread recipe and some others off the dietdoctor.com website. I gave the recipes to one of my diabetic friends but he could not take to them. My cousin is pre-diabetic and he didn't like them either. A lady in my German class went pre-diabetic and she didn't like the almond flour bread as she found it too soggy. My friend in France who has no blood sugar problems really liked the flaxseed bread and too the recipe home with her.

Again very individual according to taste but it might be worth a try.

I am pre diabetic so just trying to get my sugar levels down. When I spoke to the diabetic nurse for advice she told me I was ok with 2 slices of brown wholemeal bread a day, brown rice and pasta. Basically everything in moderation otherwise I wouldn’t know what to eat in place of bread. So stick to just 2 slices surely that is ok.
For me - I can't manage many carbs in a day, it is like having a broken leg and being advised that rapping it a couple of times with a small hammer every day would not be harmful at all.....

I do have lots of meat and fish with plenty of steamed veg . Plus fruit .
Just need my porridge with blueberries each morning otherwise would struggle with hunger pangs all morning. Not sure what cauliflower rice is or courgetti spaghetti. As long as I feel full I’m happy. So open to suggestions.

Many find that full fat Greek yoghurt and berries with seeds, nuts and a small portion of a low sugar granola is sufficiently filling until lunch or eggs in any form with bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, smoked salmon is also good, you could likely tolerate 1 slice of toast.
Cauliflower rice is just grated or finely chopped cauliflower which people use as a substitute for rice with curry or in stir fries, Courgette spaghetti is coarsely grated or finely chopped into strips used instead of pasta.
I use black bean or edamame bean pasta as it is much lower carb than normal pasta.
Berries are the lowest carb fruit with bananas, grapes, pineapple, mango the highest. the others somewhere in the middle.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a useful resource or giving carb values of different portions of a whole range of foods, it help to make better food choices as you can compare and judge whether those carbs are worth it for flavour and enjoyment. It was and still is my bible.

Courgetti spaghetti is a courgette spiralised to look like spaghetti strips. I once had some in Bella Italia and have also done my own. I don't have a spiraliser so used a potato peeler. Cauliflower rice is rice made with cauliflower so it looks like rice. Tesco sell it in frozen packs.

If you like porridge and you would not feel right without it it is probably best to test against it. I suppose if it did spike and it was only one thing you ate that was doing that it would be OK. (More experienced posters please correct me if I am wrong here). The trouble is if you don't have the porridge and you are going to feel hungry you might then go for something which is even worse. You may also be one of those people it does not affect.

Let's be honest here, most coffee shop customers go in for hot drink & a sweet treat, demand is there for such items like cakes & sweetened beverages, wouldn't imagine they'd be much demand for low carb goods so it's all about profit just like any other business.

Was in Costa earlier this afternoon with wife for coffee & cake, carrot & walnut cake in Costa is best we've had, delicious.
yes as type 1 you can get rid of the blood sugar with insulin but for us that are tortured to do it by diet alone. Tis unfair that in 2024 we have to sit with just a coffee with all those wonderful cakes around us. Why not rub it in carrot n walnut cake wow I'd die for that and will have to if I ignore the diabetes going higher I suffer the consequences. legs off, going and annoying those in a nd e taking away from real casualties. it would help if there were somethings we could eat guilt free. However like all made up cakes online it would cost 3 times the price so not something we would pay for.sadly.,

There are lots of recipes online for low carb, The cooked breakfast can be good watch the sausages Heck are good and if you look there are others. Greek yoghurt is good and I like nuts and flaxseeds and just count the carbs. Not too many but enough. I Love muffins made with almond flour and berries. I make them in cup -cake tins and so smaller so I have one for bfast and then one mid morning . That usually makes me feel I have a cake.
I have tried other cake making on the sugar free Londoner site but sadly I want to eat and eat them so have stopped.
I find summer easier as salads make a great lunch. Soups and stews are good too. I like to have swede/turnip or celeriac instead of potatoes. I love Tesco's frozen cauliflower rice and I had rice the other day and thought this is tasteless so iIhave got used to it.
Nothing substitutes bread for me so its portion control and a treat.
I make the courgette and aubergine do as pasta. leaks is another.
I love cabbage shredded as this too makes the plate full or you can wrap things in it like beef olives, I use this like cannaloni for my basil and pea and cheese bake. I thought I'd miss a ragu but cream cheese cream and cheese make a good substitute.
I am however still having high blood sugar and am on meds and I am not losing weight.
So for those it has cured. I must have too many times I go beyond.
I drop at times but others its still in the 9's so I remain challenged. Please excuse spelling and grammar I'm not good with that either.

Sadly that's how business models work like costa, they turn over best selling items at max profit.

Do feel for those who follow restrictive diets like low carb, tried it once myself & know how it feels to be denied delicious treats but yes the choice was mine not forced upon me unlike yourself.

Maybe you could looked at recipes posted by a member called Martin, just forget his username but he posts some photos of low carb cakes that look delicious, pop one in your bag & take it along to a coffee chain to eat, we sometimes buy a cake from a shop before going to coffee chains or garden centres where prices are extortionate to have with our coffee.

That is a good idea. I wasn't aware they let you do that but, then, I suppose they wouldn't really be looking and checking.

Ha ha we don't ask for permission, but tbh nobody bats an eyelid.
Usually a sign up or a disclaimer only food bought here can be eaten here.
Still its worth a try , I try not too have as it really is not good for us but does not stop me hoping they would.
As for Martin its too many baked I tried but i ate too many.
No i need to be good and just get on with my enemy and negativity on food.

Wife's handbag comes in handy for popping items in, most places are to busy to notice & staff, mostly youngsters couldn't give a hoot anyway.

If they do say anything just tell them if they catered for your dietary needs you could eat their food, and continue eating it 😉

Eating out is supposed to be a pleasure.
Having an argument about catering for your needs does not make it a pleasure, it just makes it horrible for you and for the waiting staff who are very likely too junior to be able change the menu.
I am not saying it is right but is it a battle worth having for yourself and the staff in the cafe?

No need to make a battle out of anything, and I am not suggesting engaging in a battle. But getting the message across that their food is very much lacking is worthwhile.
As nonethewiser points out - most staff will be youngsters that really don't care, and are actually unlikely to say anything.

One of the most difficult things, eating out on the hoof, virtually all the fast convenient foods for lunch are high carb. If eating out I either skip or take one of my low carb rolls with me, or a wrap. Can then either transfer bun and sandwich contents or ask vendor to do say bacon and egg roll or burger etc in my roll, they are always very accommodating!

Yes best just do things surreptitiously or not at all.

As a slightly unusual insulin dependent with absolutely no pancreas - I carry a "man-bag" stuffed with an array of snacks inside (along with my insulin, Creon and latest pills and potions). Most of my snacks are high carb as hypo responses a few are low carb items such as Kind protein bars. I have no embarrassment or concern about eating something from my goodies bag while out, with my over-priced coffee!
