i have put off doing a carb free meal to check basal rate but now needs must
Does anyone know if I can have cucumber with my measly lettuce leaves & omlette.
Any other ideas would be welcome. Thanks

Hi Wendybeal,

Don't have cucumber with an omelette but if you want to 120g is only 2g of carbs (80g is only 1g). I prefer omelettes with cheese, (Pilgrims Choice, Mature Cheddar, Grated), which is 0 carbs or with cheese and cherry tomatoes, 80g which is 2g of carbs. If you chuck in 120g of tomatoes it's only 4g of carbs. This is for a 3 Egg Omelette.

Regards,
Brian

My pleasure... could try hard frying streaky bacon (so that it's crispy 0 carbs ) and spreading that over the cheese before folding the omelette... a lovely taste...

I don't bother with a carb free meal, just delay the meal a bit or miss it completely that day - you never need to do the test in 6 hour tranches anyway as long as you cover the full 24 hours even if it takes you a week doing one bit a day. The overnight one is likely to be over longer than 6 hours anyway.

Eating anything completely messes up abasal test for me. In the absence of carbs, protein is converted to glucose albeit more slowly, so my test would be completely invalidated.

Same as @Radders, in the absence carbs I find the protein raises my BG and get much better results by skipping the meal.

Can anyone explain about testing basal rate and why it is necessary?
Type 1 since march. Novorapid and levemir.

If the amount of basal insulin you take isn't correct i.e it doesn't keep your BG more or or less level in the absence of food you will be compensating for it by increasing or decreasing the amount of insulin you take with your meals. It could also lead to unexpected highs and hypos overnight or if you skip a meal.
