Hey everyone,

So my mum's GP practice have asked her to have a follow up blood test as her Hba1c came back at 42 from an annual health check. She is very slim, but had been on a low saturated fat diet for the past year (that can often mean higher carb). However, she is being quite proactive and is already starting to think how she can alter her diet. I've been able to help her with some things, but one thing she did ask me that I got stumped on was what to have in place of a slice of cake. I don't mean here which cakes are low carbs, but instead what could she outright swap it with if she fancied some? She does usually have some form of cake, often a teacake, each day. If anybody has any advice, we'd be grateful! 🙂

I might be missing the point, but there are lots of recipes for low carb cakes buns and breads - look at the website lowcarblondoner as a good starting point.
Low fat is not a good idea as the natural fats (not seed oil derivatives) are the raw materials for so many essential substances and structures in the body - our brain, nervous system, hormones and the like are all fat based, and the essential repair substance, cholesterol, is targeted and reduced at some peril.
A Hba1c of 42 indicates that just a few changes could turn things around, so I don't think that any severe cutbacks would need to be made, just a few alterations in the makeup of meals.
One thing about low carb is that it is very satisfying and things such as snacks or even whole meals can be missed as it is easy to forget about them.

Thank you - should have mentioned the drs put her on low Sat fat diet due to hereditary high cholesterol.

Thanks also for your recommendations! I think her/my question was more what would you perhaps have in place of a teacake/cake in the form of another food stuff, but the recipes will be good to look at for sure!

ah familial hyper cholester whatsit is a special case.
Some of the low carb ingredients need to be sent off for as they can be difficult to find - I store mine in the fridge and freezer to extend their shelf life as it can make a considerable difference. The coconut and other flours, seeds and nuts are several years beyond their best before dates, but seem absolutely fine.

A smaller piece of cake with some berries? A yoghurt? Her a1c is only just over the border so it’s only going to need small changes hopefully

I have never used them, but there are a number of places now doing low carb and keto cakes. They aren't the cheapest apparently, but they are out there. Just a couple I can remember:

Seriously guilt free
Seriously Low Carb

Some are gluten free, others not, if that is a consideration (to anyone)

I bought some Seriously Low Carb hot cross buns at Easter. They were quite calorific, but v low carb. They weren't bad slathered with a load of butter!

Or, as @Lucyr says, just a smaller slice of cake. You don't mention how old your mum is @pawprint91. My mum developed T2 in her very late 70s along with dementia and died at 81. I bitterly regret denying her cake now, it was one of her few pleasures. She wasn't overweight and I think was only just into the diabetic zone. If your mum is on the elderly side, just portion control could be the way forward. Best of luck

Oh - I just remembered someone recommending chocolate eclairs as being - if you just eat one, quite low carb as there is not much pastry involved.
