BS readings

Hi. Thank you.

So what type of reading would mean a meal I eat was no good please ?

What would be too high ? What is dangerously low ?

Does a non diabetics BS rise after a meal too ?

Sorry for all the questions

X

Ideally you'd be looking at a rise of no more than 3mmol post meal

As a Type 2 I believe your target for post meal is 8mmol or below, if your not on medication then it's not likely you'll go too low but anything below 4 is a hypo

Yes non diabetics BG rises after eating too and fluctuates throughout the day
xx

Kaylz is right. Everybody's BG varies during the day.

In terms of levels again Kaylz has got it spot on. You can forget lows if you are not on medication, either insulin or one of the medications that encourage your pancreas to produce insulin. In terms of highs, then you should raise your eyebrows and get advice at consistent double figures and get advice urgently if you are consistently in the high teens or twenties. Looks like you are well away from those levels.

An HbA1c of 48 (the tip-over point for a diabetes diagnosis) is very roughly equivalent to having a spot reading average of 8. There is no direct conversion because they are measuring different things. So if your BG comes down to below 8 a couple of hours after a meal, then the chances are your average BG will be below 8 even though it might have gone above that in the couple of hours whilst your system was processing the carbohydrate and then reacting to the glucose in the blood that was produced.

Keep asking the questions. We all knew nothing to begin with!!

Thank you so much, dont want to bombard people with too many questions and everyone get sick of me lol

What I did wonder was if I eat my evening meal at 7pm and did my BS before. Then at 8pm I have some yogurt and fruit or sugar free jelly. Then do I measure 2 hours after the evening meal or 2 hours after everything? Or is it inaccurate if I eat something after my evening meal?

Thank you x

Don’t worry about firing questions at us. We have all had to learn how to manage, and there is plenty of support on here. Just keep the questions coming and people will try to help.

Your questions are already showing that you are getting the hang of things. The later food will be raising your BG as well as the food from your main meal, so it will be difficult to get a picture of the impact of either, but it will spread the rise so probably reduce the spike. I think I would test two hours after the yogurt, or if you can afford the strips both, so that you see if spreading out the meal has reduced the spike.

Good point about spreading things out and SB2015 has suggested one approach. Personally I have three meals a day and a biscuit with my evening brew. No snacks otherwise - OK maybe the odd ice cream when it is hot. This reduces the complications and helps in working out what is going on.

Thank you all so much. This forum is so lovely and helpful. I worried before joining incase people would be overly judgemental about things like having the odd treat and takeaway but you have all been so helpful.

I keep saying BS as I thought it was Blood Sugars but everyone else is using BG, is this Blood Glucose ?

So if I can keep my readings within the ranges, along side loosing the weight, is this how I could possibly get into remission ? Or should I be aiming for lower readings ? X

Bingo. You have got the basic principle that works for most sorted. That's the hard part done.

Now the other hard part. Putting a plan together to meet those goals and sticking to it! 😉

Many of the HCPs still refer to it as Blood Sugar levels but it is indeed Blood Glucose levels.
I often have a good shout at the radio as news items so often talk about sugar rather than carbs.
It gives the impressions that if you get rid of sugar all is well. However as you have identified it is all carbs that get converted to glucose once inside us. Our bodies don’t care what they are dressed up as.

Thank you I will have a look into it.

Left a bit confused after dinner times readings.

BG before dinner = 5.6
Dinner = Baked potato, chicken mayo, cheese, salad.
BG 2 hours later = 5.2

I really thought after eating a baked potato that it would be higher, not lower. X

There are many other factors to fit in as well, not just the food we consume, exercise for instance can play a huge part in BG, some forms can lower it, some can spike it for a period and then crash it later (although that's more likely in a Type 1), hormones, weather, some find in warmer weather their levels are lower, if alcohol has played any part even the day before so food alone can not be seen as the only factor in influencing BG, illness, stress etc can all play a part too xx

And don't forget the diabetes fairy!!

More education for you Autumn2020. The diabetes fairy is an imp who travels around and a visit from her can be deemed to be responsible for wayward BG readings for which there is no apparent explanation.

There is some doubt about her gender - I'm convinced she is female - or indeed whether there is more than one of them.

Thank you.

Just had my first high reading, which felt really scary. 10.3 from 5.3 x

5.3 is really good. 10.3 was presumably 2 hours after eating - what did you have?

No problem, make a note of what you ate because it could be that there is something you are particularly sensitive to.

Its how I found out that cappuccinos and apples were bad news for me. Oh, and museli with some dried fruit in it. That gave me a 14.5. Needless to say, they are all off my current menus as is anything mostly made with wheat flour.
