Hi
Just a question please. I use an insulin pump which usually gives reasonable control not brilliant but ok. Over the past 24 hours despite giving myself corrective doses of insulin my readings haven't come down, remaining mainly above 18 mmols. I have changed the cannula and made sure the insulin is coming through the tube. Has anyone else experienced this?
Many thanks.

It can happen, and youve done all the right things so far.........it maybe a sign you could be coming down with something.....

ultimnately though all you can really do is keep correcting as often as you can but also a temp basal.........stick one on for an hour or 2 at 200% or so.....see how that works..

By any chance have you any symptoms of some sort of illness? That could be the cause. Often raised BGs are an indication of something brewing before you get any other symptoms. My other suggestions are that you change your pump with fresh insulin from a new vial. I use such little insulin that I often find that a vial may have gone off.

Thank you... I have never used a temp basal but will give it a go.

OMG.. temp basals are utterly brilliant! Which pump do you have?

I don't think I am coming down with anything and have ridiculous health anxiety so I am extra vigilant. I am not particularly stressed currently either which I know puts readings up. Thank you for your response.

Apologies for jumping on your thread @LizG and I hope you manage to get your BM readings down - there are a lot of members on the forum who are very helpful. Myself I'm not on a pump I'm on mdi.
@novorapidboi26 welcome back to the forum we've or I've not seen you on here for quite a while.

Hi @LizG Change the insulin and refill the cartridge but when I’m high like that I always correct with a pen. You need to know the insulin is in and working.

Get your blood sugar down with the pen and then you’ll be better placed to sort the problem.

Medtronic canulas are the pits so you might find you have a faulty batch. Which canula do you use?
Def use a temp basal rate that's what it's there for.
Weather is cooler as well so that could be the reason for the need for extra insulin.
If you have checked your sites /insulin then go back to basics and do a basal test.

My goodness I have just emailed my diabetic nurse as reading your responses (which I am so grateful for) I realise how unfamiliar I am with my pump and I don't have any insulin pens anymore!! I have asked for some refresher training on the pump etc. I have only been diabetic for 44 years !!! Using a pump for 6 years!!

To answer which cannula I use ... probably not the best one. Actually it's a silhouette I think?

Liz do you know how to set a temp basal rate on your pump?

And I have forgotten how to do a basal test ... I really need a refresher definately!!

Look in pump forum there's a sticky in there 🙂

Get a reusable pen(s) and some insulin cartridges in ASAP. Probably no good for your current problem but very useful for the future. I’ve resorted to a pen a number of times over my many years of pumping. Simple but very effective usually in situations like this.

Another thing to try now is inserting your cannula in a different body area. Again, that can make a big difference.

Not really I have just read the section in the manual, honestly it just doesn't register in my brain at all. I have read the manual several times and I still can't get it! Quite worrying really as I am a nurse ... mental health not general fortunately...

OK
highlight basal on your pump
press centre button then arrow to get to the section you want it will then show temp basal.
Click on temp basal
You can then set it to what ever level you need/want.
