Hi all

I'm new here, not diagnosed as diabetic, but I have recently purchased a bg monitor after it is recommended to check fasting glucose before starting Michael Mosleys blood sugar diet which I am intending to start on tuesday when the kids go back to school.

I was shocked to find my fasting level after 10 hours overnight is 6.7 mmol. This has been same last two mornings.

I have just measured my blood sugar again, two hours after lunch which was a chicken fajita wrap, then a pink lady apple around 40 minutes before I did the test. Was 25.5mmol!

Should i be massively concerned with these numbers? I am around 3 stones overweight and am conscious of reducing this but wondering if i should be making an appointment asap rather than giving it a few weeks to see if the blood sugar diet improves things.

Thanks for anyone reading

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Good grief, I had a Pink Lady yesterday but apples are very carby. Maybe go docs anyways just to put your mind at rest.

6.7 is perfectly normal, I wish my daughter could have numbers that low every morning!

25.5 is not, however if there was any residue of apple on your finger when you tested that would create a falsely high reading. Always make sure you wash your hands immediately before testing! Maybe try that test again tomorrow and make absolutely sure your hands are clean before you test. Another trick is to wipe away the first drop of blood and test the second, that way anything on your hands which might affect the test should be wiped away with the first drop.

If you repeat that test and still get a very high result then you probably need to see your doctor. Good luck 🙂

Hi and welcome from me too.

I also believe your post lunch reading of 25 was likely compromised by some apple juice on your fingers. It is surprising how a tiny bit of something sweet on your fingers which you can't even see or feel can affect the result so dramatically. I always wipe the first drop away and use the second for every test and still got caught out one day with an unexpected high reading which must have been from a jelly baby I had eaten earlier to treat a hypo.

If you get a particularly unusual/unexpected reading you should always wash hands and retest to confirm

Your morning fasting reading could be better but is within range and losing weight may well improve it.

There is more to BG than just the food you eat. Something like 42 factors can affect your blood glucose levels. On a morning there is a good chance that your liver is releasing glucose into your blood stream to give you energy to start the day. This is referred to as Dawn Phenomenon and as the name suggests, can start occurring in the early hours with some people but for others like myself it doesn't strike until I get out of bed (Foot on the Floor syndrome). It might be worth testing before you get out of bed on a morning if you don't already do that to see if you get a better reading, but probably not worth waking up in the early hours to check unless you are particularly keen!

Hi. Although the Mosely Blood Sugar diet will help a lot, just reducing the carbs in your diet should work equally well or better.
