when i got up this morning blood glucose was 12.4 then had breakfast bite size shredded wheat put some raspberrys & some cinnamon on them & almond milk just tested before my dinner & blood glucose is 15.7 should i not be having the cereal .

Cereal is one of the worst offenders unfortunately. Typically all of them create huge spikes particularly as insulin resistance can be greater in the morning. Greek yogurt with some berries and a sprinkle of low carb granola (for crunch) can be a good alternative.

Hi dingdong
It is carbs in all forms which will spike your blood sugar. That includes starchy things like cereal, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes as well as sugary things

Porridge is still carbohydrate, although it supposedly goes through your stomach more slowly so might not spike your blood sugars so high. Unfortunately everyone is different, what one person can get away with another can not, so you just have to experiment and see what works best for you. You might find that one particular type of cereal is OK for you, or you may not!

Thanks for the reply, think I'm going to have to do a food dairy and check my levels to see what triggers my BM.

Is flavoured porridge ok ??
Hello. If by ‘flavoured porridge’ you mean stuff like Quaker Oat So Simple, then definitely not! Look at the carb level on the packet. I can get away with about 60g (cooked) steel cut oats prepared with water then refrigerated overnight and microwaved. I add milk and Erythritol Gold (to pretend I’m having brown sugar!). After 2 hours my BG has gone up less than 1 mmol/mol. You could add fruit but I don’t like hot porridge and cold fruit.

I find that porridge causes spikes, even 'proper' rolled oats with beefy Scotsman on the packet. My father's family were cleared off their croft way back but perhaps I still retain the ability to digest oats.

I have been pre diabetic for about a year. However I’m feeling unwell, and thirsty as well as peeing a lot so going to see my GP in case I’ve got diabetes now. I‘ve been reading about “spikes” after meals. Is this a feeling of tiredness or lightheadedness or something else? This is how I‘ve been feeling.

Hi… yes high sugar spikes can make you feel very tired, I found that my eyes got quite sore and heavy and even sometimes my husband said I would almost act drunk ! Sometimes prediabetics will choose to purchase a meter, just to keep a closer eye on things. Please let us know how you get on with doctors. Worst case you have tipped over the diabetes threshold…. We can helps you get back on track… no worries xx

Ah thanks so much for replying. I found this really helpful. I’ll certainly be back here again xx
