BG Friendly Breakfast Ideas?

I'm with Mike on the croissant front - however! if buying bags of them in a supermarket either here in the UK or in France - they have less fat in them than those from a bakery - which are A Lot more expensive. You get what you pay for and I'm well worth it! Apricot jam obviously.
Oh I'd forgotten about apricot jam!! Now I'm having loads of sensory memories of France and my late Papa who was a Parisian - thank you.

Used to be eggs and toast. Occationally cooked breakfast (inc beans, toast & maybe hash browns.) I tested on the cooked breakfast and got a rise of <=3 if I recall correctly.
Cheese and toast.
Baked beans.
A little bread seemed to keep within target.
I dumped Shredded Wheat (no sugar) as that gave me a rise of 5.7! o_O

I usually have 27g porridge with milk and a spoonful of yoghurt or peanut butter, or a slice of wholemeal bread with eggs done any way. Odd thing though, if my BS is higher, say 8.5-9, porridge sends it spiking, if its lower than 8 i only get a small rise. I love Skyr yoghurt, fat free, low carb and high in protein. Really nice with walnuts. If i have it for breakfast though i get a bigish spike, but if i have it at lunchtime it doesn't make a difference. Hey ho...the wonderful thing about diabetes is...the unpredictable

Interesting thread. It definitely is the trickiest meal of the day I think. I do like breakfast and I know that for me if I had one slice of toast my stomach would be rumbling within a couple of hours.

I’ve been having 40g jumbo porridge oats made with soya milk and then I add a few nuts or seeds, a sprinkle of cinnamon. In the warmer weather this can change to same oats and milk but I put it in the fridge the night before, add the same toppings, usually, and a dollop of yogurt. Linzis granola also an option, with yoghurt or soya milk. The cold fridge oats tend to give me the least spike, but then a couple of days ago got an 11 an hour later. No obvious reason why.

I did dabble with shredded wheat minis recently, as I just fancied some. Produced quick spike which did come down quite quickly back into range, but was hungry by mid morning.

Depending on waking levels I tend to pre bolus around 20-30 minutes if it’s around 5, or anything up to an hour if it’s 7 or higher. All fun and games....I really fancy some breakfast now🙂

A teeny amount of carb, usually 15g-20g, one unit Apidra and a nice long walk (an hour and a half at the minute). Greek yogurt, berry fruit, coffee and a generous splash of hot milk, sometimes a dollop of porridge. If exercise is out of the question, an ICR of 1:10, but I still have to go easy on the carb if I don’t want my BG to shoot up and crash back down to earth later.

Bread or granola are impossible!

Not so this morning... *sigh* I noted that my Libre trace was rising after 20 minutes so waited an extra 15-20 minutes, then had my perfectly normal single slice of toast... which proceeded to hit my BG like a train and I leapt to 11.2 within about 30 minutes. Yet on other days I’d get barely a wobble from the same food choice (yesterday I went from 7.1 to 6.0 over the same time period).

So annoying! That’s the thing that always gets to me with diabetes: you can do everything right and still the silly diabetes will throw in random highs 😡 Or sometimes the ‘diabetes world’ will reset itself and something that’s worked fine for ages will suddenly be totally inadequate. Then, just when you adapt, it can all go back to how it was before.🙄

Never a dull moment with diabetes! 🙄

Yup! The familiar dance!

It’s one of the reasons I encourage members who are new to self monitoring to be a little cautious before consigning any foods to the ‘never again’ list.

There are a few ‘not worth the aggro’ foods for me, but mostly i am willing to give things a second chance or two. Or more... depending on how much I enjoy them :D

Eat natural granola and yogurt every week day for me and most weekends too as I love it. Occasionally I’ll have a couple of slices of livlife bread with poached egg and avocado with a few chilli flakes

Homemade granola with full-fat Greek yoghurt. Have to keep busy straight after and move a lot to avoid a spike but in general works pretty well for me.
Weekends I have more time and usually do something involving eggs, spinach etc
I do love a croissant tho... wish I could eat them everyday but my waistline won’t allow it.

Hi Helen, how's it going, diabetes wise? - you've certainly got your brekkies cracked that's for sure. 🙂

Hiya. All good, I've lost 6kg during lockdown. I was very strict with our meals & meal times while we were all at home but of course during the first 2-3 weeks we had to eat what we could get until I could sort out our Tesco deliveries 🙄. You OK?

Slice of seeded toast and peanut butter works mostly, except when that ****** fairy is lurking and messing with me. Still a creature of habit, exactly the same breakfast and lunch every single day, makes it more interesting how diabetes can still throw a curveball even when your routine is absolutely identical.

A bowl with five sliced strawberries, 10 walnut halves, half a slice (30g) of pumpernickel broken up, juice of half a lemon. Yum yum!

Together with a big soy flat white with 30g of chia seeds in it.

Some great ideas here as I’m getting bored of my bran flakes and wholemeal toast 🙂

Half a large or one small gammon steak is a tasty alternative to a slice of toast. Two eggs, done anyway or poached with grated cheese on top. Smashed seasoned avocado. Sautéed mushrooms. You can put all sorts on top.

I've been growing Swiss chard which has large spinach like leaves. I have been using that as a wrap for bacon mushrooms, Halloumi and sliced tomato with a bit of cheese coleslaw.... a kind of low carb take on a BLT sandwich with extras.
Other options are:-
2 egg omelette with mushrooms, onion, cheese and maybe also ham and courgette (especially now they are in season) peppers, aubergine etc... whatever I have in the fridge that needs using up with a large side salad of mixed leaves, 2 cherry tomatoes. cucumber and coleslaw.... I usually have to inject a unit or two of bolus insulin 1.5-2 hours later to cope with the spike from the protein.

Creamy Greek natural yoghurt with a few rasps or a couple of spoons of rhubarb stewed with a little Stevia or just starting on the blackcurrants now since they have just ripened.... need to get them before the birds do... again minimally stewed with a little Stevia and always add a good dessert spoon of mixed seeds and some chopped nuts.

If I am want to have something on the go, I have a Nature Valley Protein bar but at just under 10g carbs it needs a unit of bolus insulin.

I have also occasionally been treating myself to porridge made with 30g jumbo oats made with water and a little sweetener and then Creamy Greek natural yoghurt seeds and a few frozen summer berries stirred in.... again this needs bolus insulin of 3 units

I too enjoy the Eat Natural Low Carb Granola with Greek natural yoghurt and berries and seeds similar to how I serve my porridge above. It is only half the carbs of the porridge so 1.5-2 units of bolus insulin required depending upon how much of it I use.

Sounds delicious! And as I said at the beginning of the thread, I think we T1s have a comparatively free rein with breakfasts being able to dose insulin for it @rebrascora - though like you I often try to keep the carb count down around 25g ish. Still get curve-balls thrown in every few days though! Especially if my basal needs tweaking, as that seems to disproportionally mangle my bolus needs!
