Just got my copy of the 250th issue of Balance, so thought I would do a quick review. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed with this issue. For one thing, I can find no mention of the forum (or if it's there, it's well-hidden) - a bit of a come-down from the heady days when we got three mentions in one issue
Secondly, although this is the 250th issue I don't feel that they have made the most of this landmark. There are some good articles, don't get me wrong - an interesting article about a 60 year old Type 2 triathlete, and a Type 1's trip to Borneo, for example. There's a good piece about a lady who has lived with Type 1 for 60 years who picked up most of what she knows from her Type 1 father, diagnosed himself in 1928 and treated by the great RD Lawrence himself in the very early days of insulin. However, I would have liked to have seen more examples of how knowledge has grown and treatments improved since that first issue, and what we might look forward to in issue 500. There are a couple of examples describing the introduction of the insulin pen device and retinal photography, but (maybe it's the historian in me!) I would have liked to have seen much more.
So my verdict is, what is there is interesting, but the issue did not seem out of the ordinary to me, if anything it seemed more 'lightweight' than recent issues, although the pagecount remains the same.
Perhaps if any members feel inclined they could write to Balance to let them know that we exist! 🙂 email blalnce@diabetes.org.uk
