Just got my copy of the 250th issue of Balance, so thought I would do a quick review. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed with this issue. For one thing, I can find no mention of the forum (or if it's there, it's well-hidden) - a bit of a come-down from the heady days when we got three mentions in one issue :( Secondly, although this is the 250th issue I don't feel that they have made the most of this landmark. There are some good articles, don't get me wrong - an interesting article about a 60 year old Type 2 triathlete, and a Type 1's trip to Borneo, for example. There's a good piece about a lady who has lived with Type 1 for 60 years who picked up most of what she knows from her Type 1 father, diagnosed himself in 1928 and treated by the great RD Lawrence himself in the very early days of insulin. However, I would have liked to have seen more examples of how knowledge has grown and treatments improved since that first issue, and what we might look forward to in issue 500. There are a couple of examples describing the introduction of the insulin pen device and retinal photography, but (maybe it's the historian in me!) I would have liked to have seen much more.

So my verdict is, what is there is interesting, but the issue did not seem out of the ordinary to me, if anything it seemed more 'lightweight' than recent issues, although the pagecount remains the same.

Perhaps if any members feel inclined they could write to Balance to let them know that we exist! 🙂 email blalnce@diabetes.org.uk

Got my copy this morning in a Royal Mail plastic bag as the original had completely split open. Don't know if I've lost any inserts but I guess I could have done without them anyway!

There was a lottery leaflet, a Contour XT leaflet, a DUK Fundraising calendar, a DUK Care Events pamphlet, and a Change4life recipe booklet 🙂

Correct, Northie as mine arrived today and have just read it too.

However re recipe leaflet, not a carb count to be seen. In any of the recipes. Yet they refer to the leaflet being included in a little mention on the side of a page so they obviously know it's there and presumably have seen it?

Elsewhere people say instead of toast and honey to have a banana smashed up on bread ....... and quite a lot of people want us all to eat porridge and if it isn't sweet enough, then just add fruit. All nice healthy low fat brekkie options ......

😱

Healthy for whom one wonders? not diabetics at large or the NHS, one conjects ...... but good for the drug companies probably?

Now I wouldn't actually mind if these people said they'd tested their blood and none of these things spike them and of course they may have done but that hasn't been printed, so am not directly criticising the people that said it. All well and good if they did and they also like eating those options.

But I'd want to know that before trying it - if I swapped overnight and became T2.

There were similar comments the last time a Change4Life booklet was enclosed, clearly no one took heed of the carb count suggestion. I know the leaflet is designed for the general population, but adding a carb count would have made it more relevant and useful to the 3m people with diabetes or at risk, which is (I would have thought) a major part of the audience it is targeted at.

I am sorry to say i feel the same. I normally pick something up that interests me but ? I have just tried to go on site in this copy & "no can do". Who are the reporters etc ? 🙄

Has anyone tried to complete the survey from Merck Serono which is mentioned in Balance?

Merck Serono is conducting a study on blood glucose monitors. If you are interested in taking part, and expressing your opinion on this matter, you can do so here...http://www.snapsurveys.com/swh/surveylogin.asp?k=135583977090

Ridiculous survey. I have emailed them and said to check the thread in t'other forum where pertinent comments have been made. They did have the grace to email me back and have thanked me for the constructive criticism and passed my email to the relevant dept.

I have just done the servey. What a pile of----. I got sick about half way through. I would pay the man off who done those ????????? 😡

How on earth did it get past checking, when you can only select one insulin? 😱

~Actually, just realised - I only use one insulin, they must have designed it just for me! :D

LOL @ Alan! I had to choose one.... and forget the other... isn't it just a pile of poo even if you beaver through to the end.

Not read the survey yet but pumpers only use one insulin :D

That's true Sue, but they're still in the minority. Plus many of them have dedicated meters, whereas peeps on MDI can use whatever meter they want.

Sue have a look at it. I can guarantee even though you like me do only use one insulin (and not sure yours is even there!) you'll hate it!

LOL
