Bad news, but not as bad as I was expecting.

Now I've just discovered the effects of lockdown, lack of exercise, and inability to get a supermarket delivery. But it's not an excuse, as I know I only have myself to blame. Others managed just fine, lost weight and reduced their HbA1c.
My weight shot up beyond my diagnosis weight but I'm getting on top of that. I want to try and lose 6kg by Christmas, and 18kg by next Easter. I have been able to get deliveries, not just relying on the contents of the carb heavy Pensioners Box (you got no choice) and I'm back in the pool now. My BP was surprisingly good and the Diabetic Nurse was very pleased with it. But my HbA1c has shot up and now I have to accept I will need to take Metformin as my result was 66. We discussed it, because of my Diverticular Disease, and I am to try the slow release version. I'm aware I can expect even worse diarrhoea than I already have (overnight incontinence pads at the ready), but are there any other side effects to look out for?

Hello @Felinia
Sorry to hear that the results have taken a downward turn. The changes that Coronavirus has imposed on us, have been very difficult to deal with.
I guess the positive side is though, that you have succeeded in getting Hb1ac down before so you know what to do and that you can achieve it. I hope it goes well, and I hope that you also know from before as well, that forum members are here to support and help you as much as we can.

I hope that it goes well with Metformin. It's effects seem to vary. I have never had a problem but I know that some people have side effects that in some cases diminish after a couple of weeks.
General advice seems to be to always take the tablets during or soon after a meal. Not sure how many you are taking but spreading them as far as you can through the day also sometimes helps.

Sorry to hear this,I suspect it is the lack of exercise that was the biggest culprit.I often have a higher one in the winter when I can get out in my garden as much. I would advise that you take with your main meal, and if you need to take more than one, take it slowly to increase,

Thanks everyone. It's supposed to be the slow release version, and I'll find out Thursday just how much. I've lived with bowel problems for over 20 years and hope it will be just a bit more of the same.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the extra challenges lockdown has thrown your way - all the best with your weightloss efforts.

Good news about the BP

I hope your HbA1c responds well to the weight loss, and your renewed efforts now that you have wider options on the food front.

Hope the pool remains open for you too!

Well, I had my diabetic review this morning and as expected, I am being put on Metformin, one slow release 500mg tablet per day. Due to my Diverticular Disease she wants me to try just the one to see if it affects me adversely. My cholesterol and urine test results are still not back, and are being chased. In the meantime it's weight loss, exercise and low carb diet, and we will review again in 3 months, with a target to lose 6kg by Christmas.

Best of luck with with the weight loss @Felinia. I'm trying to get down to healthy BMI for christmas, so I can treat myself to a proper roast spud!

I'm sure you can do it 🙂

Thanks. I'm going to take it in small steps at a time as I have 46kg to lose to reach the target I was set for a hip operation. So maybe that spud will be Christmas 2022 - in the meantime it's mashed cauliflower!!! No doubt I'll have to wait 2 years for the hip op anyway!
