On the TV last night ‘Trust me I’m a doctor’ prog, was testing the benefits of apple-cider vinegar, and it was demonstrated to bring down cholesterol levels. The effect on blood sugars wasn’t so conclusive, but it might help.

I got a red alert from my GP recently that if I didn’t get my cholesterol levels down to 5 (currently 5.5) then she would strongly recommend statins. There are so many mixed messages about statins I’d rather not go there, so I’m trying to get it down by other means so I think I’ll try the cider vinegar to see if it helps.

Does anyone else have any experience of this?
Recommended dose seems to be a teaspoonful in a glass of water. There are warnings though that the acidity may take the enamel off your teeth!:D and recommend drinking through a straw. No doubt my grandsons will think that is funny and another one of those weird things that Nanna does.🙄

I slosh it onto my salads with olive oil - but I am less than a year into that, I used to use wine vinegars but they vanished off the shelves in the 'ordinary' section and high priced ones in the connoisseurs section appeared at about the same time.
I am tested so infrequently these days - but I don't think I'll be sipping diluted vinegar though a straw any time soon.

I use Aspall organic ACV it's available in supermarkets and not too expensive, I have a tablespoon in water every evening before a meal

I’m not sure we’ve ever really seen conclusive evidence one way or another one the forum.

Several members have seen their cholesterol results improve by reducing their carbohydrate intake though.

I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment, after seeing someone end up suicidal on the stuff, which passed soon after stopping the Statins, funnily enough. If my cholesterol levels go higher, I will find another way to bring it down.

Thank you for the heads up about the vinegar, it must be worth a try if there are no adverse effects? 🙂

Dont just get any old apple cider vinegar, you have to get the one with 'mother'. Preferably raw, unpasturised and unheated. This does make a nice(ish) drink. Similar to water with lemon juice in it.

Thank you to everyone for the helpful responses.

Yes I’m sure that everydayupsanddowns is right about a good connection between Low carb eating an cholesterol level, my cholesterol dropped a while ago when I started my low carb/ more exercise way of life, but then it levelled out and has been stuck at 5.5 for a while. At each review with my GP she says I need to get down to 5, (which is the NHS ‘approved’ level for diabetics) and we have our usual ‘discussion’ 😛about taking statins, which I have resisted so far.

I am due for another blood test at the end of November, so I think it is worth giving the cider vinegar a try to see if it helps get my cholesterol level down. I will post a message after I get the test results to let you know what happens.

Hi Lilian – thanks for the info about Apple Cider Vinegar with ‘Mother’. By chance the one that I bought does have this. (I’d thought it was just an advertising thing to give me a good feeling that my dear old mum would have approved of this!) However, the label says that it is ‘mother’ of vinegar which is made of living nutrients that naturally form chains of protein enzyme modules. The taste isn’t toooo bad. 😱

Apple cider vinegar cures everything. And boosts your immune system. And cures coughs and colds. And your arthritis.

Aye, right. Snake oil does the same. There is not a single double blind trial to show it does anything. It just happens to be last years big thing. I think Goji berries were the year before. Drink the stuff by all means, it’s nowhere near as acidic as the stomach acid, so disappears in that, and goes no further. Can’t possibly do your health any good, but that’s just a scientific opinion, but the thing about science is that it’s true whether you believe in it or not.

Powerful placebo effect, mind, and tastes nice in salad dressing, though white wine vinegar is cheaper for that.

And what, might I ask, is a living nutrient? Or a chain of protein enzyme modules? Sounds like a fancy way of describing how any vinegar is created. It’s just natural, like sourdough bread.

Still, at least somebody is making money out of it.
