Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am almost 60 years old. Never been a "big" guy. I am 5'11" and never weighed more than 10.5 stones in my life. As a recently (yesterday!!!) diagnosed T2 diabetic, currently at about 9 stones, all the forums talk about weight loss. I need the reverse! Any ideas?

I'm in the same boat Paul. I'd lost about 10kg before I was diagnosed about 14 months ago. I've put on a tiny bit of weight but am still below 9 stones and just can't seem to gain more..

Hi Paul, Welcome.
Quite a few people who have T2 are not overweight sadly not me, but we do have a few on here who will hopefully be along soon.
How did you come to be dauagnosed, did your symptoms come on quickly ?
The reason I am asking is that some people are diagnosed as T2 just due to their age.

@Ljc Just for the sh*ts and giggles, I also have chronic pancreatitis which, I understand can/will lead to Diabetes. I've had more probes in me than a passing asteroid and, as you have to have faith in your medicos rather than the local witch doctor (I don't do homeopathy), I'm going with the flow, but reaching out to those in a similar space who can share their experiences.

We have a few members who are classed as pancreatic Diabetics.

Hello Paul. I was also under weight at diagnosis, because I'd been losing it in the run up. In my case it was because I was misdiagnosed as Type 2 when in fact I turned out to be Type 1. I would, have thought that pancreatitis didn't make for a Type 2 diagnosis either. What medication are you on, and how are your Blood Glucose levels doing? I found that once I'd got my blood glucose under control, my weight stabilised, and I gained some back, up to the point where I was a healthy weight again, then levelled off naturally.

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum 🙂 What were the circumstances leading up to your diagnosis, had you had symptoms for long? Do you know what the test numbers were? Do you have an family history of diabetes? Sorry for the interrogation! 🙄 Around 20% of people are at normal weight, or even underweight when diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, it's far more complicated than just 'weight and exercise', but that never comes across in any of the campaigns - but you're certainly not alone. Sometimes, what can happen is that, as the body is unable to use the glucose efficiently for an energy source it turns to burning body fat, and even other body tissue, like muscle fibre. With all diabetes there is a genetic element involved (otherwise, if it was purely down to 'lifestyle' something like 50% of the population would have it, it's actually more like 6-8%).

You do sound on the 'underweight' side of things, with your current weight and height. I am also a 'skinny', although Type 1 - I weigh around 9st 11 lbs and am 5'9". Hopefully, once you get your blood glucose levels under control and your body starts using the fuel you are supplying more efficiently, you will gain weight. Have you been given any medication?

There's a possibility that you may be a slow-onset Type 1, possibly related to the pancreatitis - are the medics doing any further investigation?

What they said, plus another question - is there any suspicion that your beleagured pancreas is also having trouble in producing Creon as well as insulin?

Bet you wonder what's hit you - you come on here expecting answers - and all you flippin get is more questions! 😱

You're not alone. I spend my life eating! Which complicates diabetes management😱
