Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I had a problem last Friday with excruitiating pain due to a UTI. This is the first infection I've had since diagnosis and everything on the market which helps symptoms of cystitis seems to bad for diabetes:confused:

My husband brought home some Cranberry capsules (I thought this would be better than Cranberry juice) but when I researched on the internet, they interact with Metformin.

I am going through the Menopause and everything out there seems to interact with Metformin. Oil of Evening Primrose oil included!!

As I'm only on 1 x 500mg capsule per day is it worth taking it? I'm still not convinced that my blood glucose problems aren't all linked to these damn hormones!

My last reading was 6.7 (3.5 hrs after eating breakfast of scrambled eggs and tomatoes) do you think the infection was caused my diabetes or a one off?

Sorry about all the questions but I'm feeling a bit down by all of this.

Donna :(

Sorry you are feeling so low. If you were living in the UK I would suggest speaking to your GP or local pharmacist as to what you can take whilst on Metformin but I can imagine that might be difficult unless your Dr has really good English.

Diabetes can leave you more vulnerable to infections and it can often take longer to fight off an infection but its impossible to say what caused this infection. Being run down can make you more vulnerable too and you have had a great deal of stress in the last few months.

I do hope you start to feel better soon, and keep posting just venting may help you a little.

See the doctor or the pharmacist and see what they can advise. I would also suggest drinking plain water for a couple of days, this helps to flush kidneys and bladder out, taking any infection and will make your urine less strong so weeing becomes easier. On the odd occaision I've had infections there I have gone off tea and coffee and fizzy drinks, so it might help if you cut them down or avoided them for a day or two. One of the imprtant things to do is to keep up withthe fluids. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Margie,

Thanks for the advice. You're so right, living in Norway makes trying to explain so much more difficult. With diabetes, I find that when you're busy and not dwelling on things, you feel somewhat "normal", then something like this comes up and, yet again, you are reminded of your diabetes. If you were to read everything, diabetes would be blamed for every ailment. Personally, being where I am (age 52) and going through the change, I think a lot has to do with how I'm feeling. it would be great to speak to other ladies out there who are coping with the meno and diabetes? Sorry guys!!

I cope magnificently when stressed, it's only after the event when I'm not looking it comes and bites you on the bum!

My bg levels have been very erratic recently and it doesn't make me feel so bad if the infection had something to do with it.

I have decided to take another look at the carbs in my diet. I do find, when I'm really watching and not eating much of potatoes, bread, rice and pasta, my bg levels come right down but you get into bad habits. Interestingly, when I'm relaxed and happy, I can generally eat these things and stay low but if I'm stressed, they can go sky high. Does this make sense?

I have been suffering repeat bouts of cystitis, my doctor prescribes me TRIMETHOPRIM, you only take 6 tablets and it clears completely. I usually have a pack 'in hand' prescribed too, so I don't have to suffer waiting for an appointment. He also gave me some nformation to look at which was quite good background reading -

Best of luck with your doctor over there, maybe he will recognise the name of the drug, assuming you want the treatment

Hi There

I did get a 3 day course of Trimethoprim and because it was a new Norwegian emergency doctor, had to fill in a form about ailments etc. I did write down that I was diabetic and just wondered if the 3 day course would be enough for me to fight the infection.

Last Friday, it was so bad that I had blood in my urine and felt really unwell, since then I have had cystitis type symptoms but nothing as bad as it was. Wondering if I now have thrush!!

Got my first appointment with my new doctor this afternoon. We have recently moved house and kommune and it's a daunting prospect knowing my hbaic is due again. Somehow, I don't think they will do it today or at least until the infection has cleared up.

It's a horrible feeling isn't it?

Donna 🙂

Hi Donna - I hope you do have success with the Trimethoprim, I was surprised how quickly it worked for me, I am a complete fan. Cystitis is very unpleasant. Don't let the infection get you down too much. How did you get on with today's appointment?

Hi There,

Went to the doctor, had a problem with language barrier with receptionist *my Norwegian isn't that good when it comes to medical matters! Anyway was asked to give another urine sample. They have their own lab in the surgery and he tested and there was no bacteria or sugar in my urine. He's asked for a first thing in the morning urine sample which I will handed in earlier.

I do feel a lot better but interestingly, in hindsight, my bg fasting levels were a lot higher when I had the infection, which I must have had without knowing for some time.

Just have to make my next app for hbaic which I think will be higher taking all that's been happening in the last 3 months. Moved house, 2 x weddings, trip back to Scotland, leak in our new house roof. No stress then....!!!

Donna x🙂
