Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all, I've been glancing at the forum a for short while but not quite sure where to start. Diagnosed with gestational diabetes in early 1991 and treated with insulin until my son was born in June 1992, I became pregnant again in 1994 and found to be diabetic from the start (which apparently is unusual for gestational diabetes). Following the delivery of my 2nd son everything seemed to return to normal but a year later I practically crawled to the doctor with an HbA1C of 29 (old money) plus a few of the usual accompanying privileges. I was initially treated as a Type 2 but it quickly became clear this was not working, by which time I was in a pretty awful way and struggling with 2 very small children. To cut a long story short I was soon provided with insulin and meter which has now evolved into a Patch pump - the greatest thing since sliced Jerusalem artichoke. Complications? I've had laser treatment on both eyes and am now having Injections for which I'm very grateful as they are definitely improving. I still struggle with control but things are heading in the right direction. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm always trying to lose weight and it seems that the harder you try, the more likely you are of having hypos which I still over-correct.. Sorry if I've posted into the wrong place.

Hi Sazzy Welcome. You're in the right place Don't worry you'll soon find your way around this site. It's good to hear that your eyes are improving.
We have a section for pumping queries which you might be interested in.
I find it's very day to over correct a hypo if not careful.

Feel free to ask questions, we're a friendly bunch here.

Welcome Sazzy

Welcome Sazzy. How are you coping with using the pump. You sound very positive about its use. Which insulin are you using?

Feel free to ask any questions. Lots of people around here happy to help.

Hello Sazzy and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Welcome Sazzy from a T2

Hello to Sazzy.

Hi, welcome to the forum, glad you found us. 🙂 I am on a patch pump too - the Omnipod and am loving it so far. I think it is really easy to overcorrect when having hypos. I now have 3 jelly babies in separate little tubs so that I don't just keep eating them! I find the 10 - 15 minute weight for them to work before re-testing the hardest as I just want to eat stuff.

Hello and welcome to the D gang Sazzy 🙂

Controlling diabetes is definitely a work in progress thing 🙄 good to hear your pump is making life better for you and the eye injections are improving things. 🙂

Hi, Thank you. I use Nova Rapid in the pump which I was also using for bolus when I was injecting. One of the great things about using a pump is that when your sugars do drop and you've still got some insulin on board, you can lower your basal rate on a temporary basis until things are back to normal. I chose the patch pump as I figured that not having tubes to worry about meant one less potential problem but I could be mistaken.

Hi stephknits, Thank you for your welcome. The 1- 15 minute delay sounds a good idea although sometimes even after my meter says I'm ok, my brain and body still feel symptomatic so it's really hard to stop eating when all your being is telling you to keep stuffing but I'll give it a try.

Hi Hobie, It wasn't fun at the time but I'm OK now, just fighting the daily battles that we're all facing. It's so amazing to find a place like this where so many people have been/are going through similar - or worse - situations.
