Tesco's own Ganola and fat free natural yoghurt this morning; immediately before testing 5.8; 1hr later 9.3; 2hrs later 6.4. Does this mean I need to tweak the 1hr and maybe replace the yoghurt with semi-skimmed milk? OR just avoid all-together

I really am confused with the testing times...

Amanda x 🙂🙂

9.3 is not too bad after an hour. Have a look at how much sugar is in the yoghurt. Not sure what to advise thoe

I think that is a perfect result. I'd be very happy with that.

Bear in mind, too, that you are still early in the process. I'll lay odds that if you're losing weight and exercising, that 1hr reading may 'improve' a bit but your 2hr reading is actually spot on!!

The guidelines I work to are :

Pre-meal : 4-7mmol/L
2hrs post meal : 7-9mmol/L

So you are doing really, really well!!!

Andy 🙂

Yup I agree with Andy.

Keep going!

Those sound like good results to me too. Well done! If you do want to smooth out the peak you could try adding a few seeds to the cereal and yoghurt but to be honest, why fix what isn't broken!!

OK, I?m going to be good here 😉

Those levels do look absolutely fine when compared to what the recommended NHS guidelines say.

It would probably be a good idea to continue working down to your target weight and see if you get the same response then. At the rate you have been going I suspect it might not take too long. When you get to target weight, if things stay as they are, I suspect your Doctor might be happy to leave you on diet/exercise ? but it depends if that is what you want and what will make you happy and not anxious.

Oh, semi-skim will have less fat but the same carbs so it will cause you to go higher. I?d keep the yoghurt. Adding seeds as per Natalie?s suggestion works too (pumpkin seeds are nice).

You are getting there, it's just small tweaks!

Thanks guys; I panic when my sugars are high after 1 hr 😱 I'm going to try ganola again tomorrow but I'm going to build up a bowl with some fresh strawberries. I bought a small tub of 'Total' authentic greek yoghurt which for a 100g portain (I won't have that much) is 96Kcal, 3.8g (carb/sugar); 5g fat; (3.6 sat fat).

Is this a good or bad choice, and strawberries are low gi aren't they.

I really need to get this food malarky sorted out. Amanda x 🙂

Thanks Mark, the weight loss is getting there; have lost over 24lbs since July and have another stone to lose before I reach target weight and hopefully be within my recommended BMI. Have my 2nd DN appointment in December so hopefully be right weight by then PLUS my I'm starting my swimming lessons next week....🙂

Andy - I just panic when my 1hr test is above 9 - I have had a few 10's' 11's but have cut these foods out.... Amanda x 🙂

Your doing well Amanda, I am getting 9+ on some 1 hour readings, but I am not getting the 11+ anymore.

I think you are sorting it out very well and I'm following behind you.🙂

Hi Amanda,

The 1hr. test interpretation is really difficult as the low G.I. carbs you are eating absorb more slowly and evenly. I would stop panicking and rely on the 2hr. testing.
Your progress is amazing and you should congratulate yourself.

this is my grumpy face :(:(. I had granola this morning with a different type of yoghurt (less fat/sugar); prior to testing my sugar was (6.3 - must have been the mug of tea I had in bed); 1 hour later it was 10.3. I think I'm just going to knock granola on the head and go with a protein breakfast. I couldn't check at 2hrs as I was sat in a meeting from 9.30am-11.30am but when I did check my sugars were 8.5, which is terrible compared to yesterday... Haven't been feeling too well so don't know if this will have a bearing on it; I think I have sniffles coming (hubby has man flu....🙄)

Ah yes, that could very well be it. BGs often rise during illness.

Hope you feel better soon/it comes to nothing

I must admit that I am getting a little fed-up now with trying to work out what I can have for breakfast; I know eggs are a good option but I couldn't have them more than once a month..... I've just posted re: peanut butter is that not fattening or bad for you? Amanda x 🙂

Quite high in calories yes, but I think the fats are mono/poly what-nots so shouldn't be too bad Chol-wise (I've been scoffing a fair few dry-roast peanuts recently and my most recent chol was the best I've had for a while, both in terms of total and splits). As you'll know by now, the fat in it helps to slow the absorption of whatever carbs are in it and whatever you spread it on.

I think you are setting yourself very tight targets (<8 at 1 hour). This is admirable, but be careful that you don't cause yourself a whole lot of stress in these early days. You seem to be spending most of your day in a very good range and I suspect that your HbA1c would put you firmly in the 'low risk of developing complications' area.

I just feel totally overwelmed. I've cut out all saturated fats becuase I have fatty liver and trying to rectify that although GP has told me not to worry about it - my liver is fine. Trying to get within the 8.5 range after 1hr is what is freaking me out and I know I am obsessing about it. It isn't the diabetes that worries me but everything that goes with it; increase of heart disease; stroke; blindness; kidney disease; numbness and even dimentia - its way too much to take on board...Rant over....

Get your sniffle out of the way. Until then, I think your earlier granola test where you ended up in the 6's after 2hrs would suggest to me that you are really fine and dandy with that.

I'm now going to say this in words of one syllable :D ......

YOU ARE DOING (damn) FINE!!

Andy 🙂

It's completely understandable to be overwhelmed and you are doing so well. My DSN told me that all of these complications are only inevitable if you have years of poor control.

I believe Mike is right about the 2hr testing and the 1hr testing is only really important if you are trying to get pregnant according to my DSN.

Your doing brilliantly, keep up the good work and it will get easier.

Amanda, good be that their your stressing too much about everything. Maybe it's the stress levels and not the food? Best to stick to testing 2 hrs after each meal, it gives a better reading.

Illness definitely elevates it. Tell me about man flu, I have one suffering from that too!

😉
