Almonds - carbs ?

Hi all

Bit confused with nuts .. in particular almonds (raw and nothing added).

Most Supermarkets etc seem to say about 6-7g carbs per 100g.

So why then in the diabetes UK meal planner:

WHY does it say almonds as a snack …40g are 1g of carbs ??? Surely 40g almonds are just under 3g of carbs ??!! I know it’s not much between 1g and 3g … but it does not add up to me !

Thanks
The Carbs and Cals book which is produced in association with DUK says 1g carb per 10g almonds so they have obviously used that information in the meal planner.
But if you have a pack of almonds I would use the information there. In any case the carb values are really approximations.

The Snack I looked at there says 30g plain almonds are 2g carbs. It doesn’t matter unless you’re eating vast quantities. As a Type 1, I have to count carbs to calculate my insulin but nuts are ‘free’ (don’t have to count) unless eating large portions eg in a nut roast.

Edited to add - Tesco has 2.1g carbs per 30g plain almonds - so pretty much what the Snack in the planner said.

Yes so it is not even the same as in the C & C book.

Thanks all.. Yup I agree the packet info is prob more reliable and 1 or 3g of carb doesn't make much difference... My point was more that if Diabetes UK is publishing info, it would be nice if it was carefully fact checked - or how can we be sure the rest of the recipes are accurate.?

It does look accurate in the Snack I looked at 🙂

The Monday mid morning snack says :

40g plain almonds
247 kcal • 1g carbs • 2g fibre

4g protein • 0 F&V

40g almonds is NOT 1g carbs.. that would mean they are 2.5g carb per 100g.

Most things with regards to diabetes are approximations - BG meters are only accurate to within 15%, carbs in foods are going to be approximations (e.g. carbs in a slice of cake will vary depending how much fruit is in your slice, apples will vary per variety and ripeness, almonds probably vary too).
But given so many other things affect our BG like stress, exercise, illness, weather, ... accuracy does not matter. These numbers are good enough to dose insulin (which will be zero for almonds).

So maybe there’s a typo in that listing - either in the amount of almonds (that is, it should be less than 40g) or in the carb amount (they put 1g but should have put more). They clearly know the correct amount as it was right in the example I looked at, so I presume this is a typo.

I’m sure it can be checked or corrected if necessary. I’m not sure who you should email but I’ll tag @everydayupsanddowns in case he knows who best to contact for comments on the Meal Planner nutritional information.

Thanks for flagging this @Philgk
