I know, I know. My only defence is that his arrogance and lack of information offered has been very unhelpful, which was not helped by that partial information got from the younger Doctor, before seeing the specialist. Believe me I know about blindness, my wife is in fact registered blind and it is several of her friends who have volunteered stories about bad treatments at opthalmology departments.

Please forgive me for being annoying...

I had only just turned 25 and less than a month into Type 1 when I was diagnosed with diabetic macular oedema, I had to have eye injections straight away, I didn't have anyone with experience to talk to about it, I was petrified and really going into the unknown but I knew for sure I didn't want my sight to deteriorate, there are bad stories about everything but anything could happen any day even in your own house to harm you, I wouldn't take any risks on leaving eyes untreated

We should be able to rely on a doctor or specialist to offer this information, support from their department. I thought we were moving towards informed consent in this country, not the old thing, that my Grandma knew all to well: " Doctor knows best, just accept it. "

This forum, ( and others, ) are very useful and a true godsend, but should be an extra, not an essential. This forum however is essential and should be pointed out to patients, by doctors. I don't know how I came across this place, but am very glad I did.

I completely understand yr blechhhh! reaction to the whole thing
Yeah, eyes are icky! :(

I had to have an op to straighten my eyes, made a complete fool of myself, very embarrassing but so glad it was done. I had those eyes where people dunno if you're looking at them or to see if the bus is coming. :D

Never had laser though. My sister has had laser for cataracts, not for her diabetes. She was in and out she says, no probs. Hope you get sorted.

The simple fact of the matter is that if you don’t have the treatment, your eyesight will deteriorate. That, to me, is a fairly simple choice. Once you’ve had it, you’ll wonder why you worried. It’s not rocket science, by the way. I’d prefer to have it done by someone who does it every day, I don’t care about letters after the name. For the same reason, I’d never let a consultant surgeon take out my appendix, it’s probably years since he did one.

So I would say if you are still in two minds, please get the treatment done.
I am going to get it done, on Friday. I am so looking forward to it! 🙄

My wife had that done when she was a child and the surgeon made a right mess of it and ruined the vision in one of her eyes! her mum then refused to get the other eye done. 😱

Yes, I have finally got there! It would have been a lot easier if I was given the information up front, as it were, from the doctor, but he was arrogant and dismissive. In fact the lack of information was shocking.I couldn't care less about the letters after his name either, but found it odd that he described himself as a " Mr. " which, I thought, denotes a consultant, yet is listed on the hospital website as a Dr. and a associate specialist, not helped when I googled him and came up with a link to a Bollywood film! 😱 Is it asking too much to be able to find out how good he is, even the record he has doing the procedure? The more junior doctor which I saw first in his clinic, was far better, even though she is not due to do the treatment, she did at least try to answer my questions. Shame I thought of others after she left and he arrived. I cannot remember her name, nor if she told me her proper job title. :(

As I said, the little literature I was given, said that the treatment was intended to stop further deterioration in my sight, when in fact my sight is close to perfect.

Just thought I would update, after getting the laser yesterday. It was OK, the laser did not hurt at all, but his manipulating the lens on my eye did, quite a lot, but it was quick and at least I didn't throw up on him! :D My eyesight was not really affected at all, so that was good too.

The doctor was much better this time, much more patient and was more than willing to explain things better, I just wish he had done that in the first place. I also think I will ask for any more appointments with him to be in the early afternoon too, as he had not long since returned from lunch, which probably explained his improved manner, as last time I saw him first thing in the morning. 🙄

Thank you all for your help and advice. I am even more impressed with the fierceness some of you have displayed at the treatments you have endured. 🙂

Thanks for the update @Greymouser

Glad the procedure went as well as it could, and hope the outcome is fully successful and that your eye health has improved as a result.

I'm really pleased that the laser went well for you.
