Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi,
This is my first post, so i hope i'm posting this in the right place. I have had type 1 for 30 years and my wife and i have started the adoption process. I have been asked to have a 'mortality report' completed on me by a doctor to, i can only assume give them an idea of my possible life expectancy. Has anyone has to do this before? I was quite shocked that they would ask a 36 year old to do this, but it may just be standard practice and im being overly sensitive.
Any thoughts?

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum 🙂 I don't have any personal experience, but I know we have one or two members here who are familiar with the adoption process, so hopefully they will be able to share their experiences. Have they offered any explanation why they are requesting the report i.e. have they said it is related to your diabetes? From what I have read life expectancy is far, far better than it used to be and improving all the time, providing that control is reasonably good (as measured by the tight, modern criteria). Hopefully, it will just be a formality for you and things will progress smoothly 🙂

Hi,
Thanks for that. i will keep looking at the posts to see if there are any other people in the same situation.

Hi Chris. Welcome 🙂

Sorry, no experience nor insight. I wonder if the report is similar to a life insurance medical report and gets triggered if there's a chronic illness involved. I can see that tey would want to know if you're poorly controlled but it seems a bit harsh to want to know if you're going to last into your 50s.

You'd have thought they'd call it a medical checkup or a health report.

I hope someone can cast some light on it for you and ease your mind. If there's any general or speicific diabetes questions you have whilst your here, feel free to ask.🙂

Rob

Having a further read through the website that cherrypie linked to One the Assesment Part one, 11c it mentions another bit about medical's.. And say if any concerns have a chat with your GP..

Unless somebody can enlighten you further via the forum, perhaps booking into see your GP might give you a clearer picture

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum. I'm currently on the list to do the preparing to adopt course before we start the official process. It will have been a 12 month wait for us. How long has it taken you since the course to get to your stage? I'm realy frustrated at the length of time everything is taking. Sorry I can't help on the medical front, but now I know what to expect as well.

Hi Chris, we adopted a little boy who is now 7, he has been with us for nearly 5 years.

Our situation is a little different as we knew the family and have done so for over 20 years and we knew the circumsatnces of little feller (who is adorable but very challenging at times).

We had to undergo a number of assesments, and our home checked over. AMongst the assesments were questions about our health as hubby has osteoartrhits and I have diabetes. The same was true for our grown up son who was jsut turned 18 and we had to give permission for the assesing social workers to approach our family doctor. We have no knowledge of a mortality report being done.

When we were being assesed, the social worker came to all of our places of work to talk to us, asked for references, our home was inspected and we had to have things like cooking tests done. Then we had to make sure we had a visible first aid kit. Our garden had been amess for a long time and as luck would have it we had someone in to help us sort it out on one of the days we were visited by the social worker.

If there is anything else you'd like to know PM me with your email adress and I'll get back to you.

Hi Chris,

A couple I know have gone through this process - she is a cancer survivor, he is a T1 diabetic. Both had to have extensive medicals before they were approved to adopt, but they have had a child placed with them for some months now, and the court date is looming :D

Good luck with your adoption journey.

Hi Dizzydi,
Its great to find someone else that is going through the same things as us. We are only a month into the process. It seems really protracted. I can understand that they need to get the right people for the children to be in the best possible family for them, but i cant imagine that it helps them much to make the thing so long and stressful. Do you have any idea when your next course is being run?

Thanks for the link, i think that adoption is such an emotive subject that everything is taken into account, but i also think that the perception of diabetes has not moved on as much as the developments, understanding and treating the condition have over the years.

Hi Chris Next course is Nov already full, then Jan and we are to far down the list for that one. So is looking like march. It will be 12 months since our first meet with the social worker in our home.

So got to be patient till we get that done. They are trying to address lack of course dates, but whether they do put on more course who knows.

Gosh, i knew we had a long way to go but it seems like the whole thing takes just so long. I live in staffordshire, and im not sure what the waiting list is like here, ill let you know as i get more info, until then i will keep my fingers crossed for you.
