Umm yes it does sound quite a lot , although I do tend to go in stages of either having lots in a short time or none for ages grrr 😡

i had 14 hypos in april, 8 in may and 8 so far in june! Apparently its all to do with my monthly cycle but i havent picked up on any patterns yet!

Oh I see , I dont see any patterns either  I have just noticed how tight your control is , does your DSN think that may play a part in how many hypos you seem to be having ? Are you still hypo aware ?

You mean because of my hba1c? Well she hasnt really said anything but it has been mentioned. The consultant isnt bothered he just likes that my hba1c is within range.
I think my insulin to carb ratio is fine just i seem to have 2 good weeks and then 2 bad weeks just havent picked up on anything inparticular!

Hiya emma lou

Was just going to mention what insulinaddict has said.

On your monthly cycle there is a thread some where on here that refers to changes...not sure of the original title of that..

🙂

And yes i am still hypo aware but sometimes not until my bs is down to about 2.5. Its just something i need sorting before i learn to drive.

Yes Emma, I notice in your sig that your HbA1c's have been extremely good. My last one was 5.3, but I think that was maybe down to a few too many hypos soon after diagnosis. I'm due another one soon and, although I'm still having fairly frequent hypos I don't think I have been quite as tight on my control so expect it to be a little higher. Are you like me, and hate anything that goes above your range so try a bit too hard to keep it below, like with slightly more insulin than you need? I'm trying to 'educate' myself to allow slightly higher levels to develop, but it's hard.

That's me as well a lot of the time - hard to keep good control and get those symptoms around 4.0!

Yeah i do i want in perfect and well it probably never will be! If i work how much insulin i need for wot im going to eat and if it comes out at about 3.2 units i will tend to take 4 instead. My dsn have given me a half unit pen so i can get closer to the correct amount that i need. Ive just been getting on with it all for the last 12 months and been thinking ive been doing really well, just yesterday after seeing the DSN and been told i wont be able to drive with so many hypos has made me think about it all. All i want is the best and it doesnt seem to be happening🙂

Emma, you just need to let things 'drift up' a bit - I know it's easier said than done! I don't drive, but you certainly need to make sure that your levels are well above 4.0 to do it - you may not feel symptoms until 2.5 but your judgement and concentration may be affected, and may suddenly dip with unthinkable consequences. I'd only feel happy driving at 6 or above, mind you, the stress would probably push it up above that!😱😉

I hate my blood sugars been around 10 and they seem to either be 10 or 3 and i hate the highs more than the lows. My dsn suggest maybe dropping my levemir to maybe 8 instead of 9. And also having another look at my insulin to carb ratio. Its like we have to work everything out on our own!

Hi emma...

I personally would agree with Northerner...you may need to push your levels a bit higher.
The half pen sounds ideal for you...I dont carb count for nathan...but if I did if carbs came to 3 would give him 3 units of insulin rather that the 4

You've done amazing to get those results in 12 mths...:D

I tend to give the 4 rather than the 3 just in case i decide i want a biscuit or something else cos i very rarely inject more than the 4 times a day that i do. So if i did want something else to eat i would have to inject or have high blood sugar. According to my dsn low blood sugars can cause long term problems to? I dont know what though. 🙂

I've done a lot of tinkering with my basal (lantus), and what I've found is that my fasting levels are in the 5-6 range instead of the 3.5-4.5 range, which is probably healthier - it is, after all, what a non-diabetic might have. So, definitely investigate the basal - maybe do some basal testing.

Its too much hard work! lol! But at the end of the day i do need to get it right at some point. I wouldnt know where to start with basal testing and neither would my dsn. They dont seem to know what they are on about most of the time.

Emma, we must be 'twins' in the diabetic world - I wonder if it's because we both come from West Yorks! I do exactly that - inject a bit more so I can have a biscuit without a correction, but then I don't have the biscuit!

We were told at the JDRF day we went to that they think it is just as bad to go low as it is to go high! But i think they meant that if your levels are generally all over the place i.e. high one minute and then hypo the next! But i dont think i would give Alex a bit more insulin than is really required - perhaps this accounts for the hypo's if you dont then eat the extra biscuit?🙂Bev

Here's a page that explains the rules - it's aimed at pump users, but you can probably work out how it applies to MDI...

http://www.integrateddiabetes.com/pump_bt.shtml

It's certainly helped me, as I no longer fear night hypos and get fewer daytime hypos.

🙂Maybe us lot from round here depend on biscuits too much lol. I find it difficult though when i do the insulin and my blood sugar is spot on and then i want something more exciting than carrot sticks to nibble on but i cant unless i have another injection. Surely 4 a day is enough!!
