4.5 weeks pregnant - stubborn BGs!

Hi

I am 4.5 weeks pregnant and I'm grateful that my blood sugar isn't going sky high after meals, but it seems to want to stay at 7 all the time. I would ideally like it lower but corrections aren't working for me! I have corrected several times within a few hours after meals, but it wants to be between 7 and 11. After every meal and often between them. It's very odd.

I'm on a medtronic pump and my team are planning to move me to an Ypsomed pump "once the hypos have stopped" but I've not had any yet... perhaps this is to come! I am seeing them next Tuesday so will raise this then. I don't know how to feel about the Ypsomed pump, not keen on having to have my smartphone on me all the time to be honest, but it seems to be the best option.

My daughter is now 7 and I don't really remember the early days of my pregnancy with her, but don't remember experiencing this!

I had stubborn highs early in pregnancy @Lauren with my normal corrections not bringing them down. What worked for me was some very gentle basal adjustments. The hypos started later, and they can be fierce and unexpected. Luckily we usually have CGMs now to give us warning.

Good luck with your pregnancy 🙂

Thank you for sharing your experience, I will definitely review my basals. It's useful to know the hypos are likely to start later. I have a CGM so hopefully will help!

The CamAPS that runs the whole shebang of the Ypso pump does the calculations and adjusts the insulin given is a cracking bit of programing because whatever it did today, at midnight it instantly forgets that and starts afresh every 00.01 rather than assuming the body is going to react exactly the same as it did yesterday, ie it responds to the body within a short while of its reaction, hence one of the reasons they are getting A LOT of pregnant ladies onto it, PDQ.

It definitely is (yet) another new learning curve.

But - hate to say this cos you don't want to think about it really right now - it has not been ever so long since it was extremely rare for a mother with diabetes actually produced a child that even thrived. Certainly in MY living memory - the 1950s - and I was born to non-diabetic parents - in 1950! Thank God for all the medical advances since then!

The Ypsomed does sound really good! I'm on the Medtronic 780g at the moment and while it's amazing, you have to wait days for the algorithm to work itself out. Sounds like it will be very beneficial.
I am very grateful for the medical advances. I can still remember the days before glucose meters, and trying to work out whether my BG was closer to 4 or 7 when comparing a test strip to the colour chart on the back of the pot it came in!!

ROFL @Lauren - ever so many people these days don't know anything about 10 drops of water, 5 drops of pee and wondering on a daily basis whether apparently getting a colour between this one and that one was harmful or not?

My God - when any colour other than dark blue meant your BG was 13.0 plus ........

Tonight my BG has been over 15 for 6 hours :( it went up to 20 earlier.
3 set changes and many careful corrections later it's still 15.6! I've probably done triple the insulin needed trying to get it down (very carefully with long times between corrections)
This is mad. Earlier today I couldn't get it up.
Literally praying that this hasn't done any damage. Baby is 6 weeks along :(

How’s your blood sugar this morning @Lauren ? Can you work out anything that might have caused that high? Apologies, but I can’t remember if you’re looping with your pump?

Early on in pregnancy I had to make a number of changes to my hourly basal rates. I remember how stressful the highs are. Are yours happening at particular times of the day? Mine were morning and afternoon mainly early on.

Edited to add another thought - I always corrected with a pen during pregnancy. This removed one variable and seemed to work best. It also gave me a wide choice of injection sites and I’d stop and think which would work fastest.

My BG was 6.2 on waking thank goodness!

Ok, so to come clean... I did eat pizza yesterday. But prior to pregnancy I had nailed pizza and knew just what to do to get my BG down fairly quickly. Was not expecting a spike of 20! And I ate considerably less than usual. Lesson learned, I'm going to avoid pizza until baby arrives!

Thank you @Inka for your advice! I never thought about using a pen to correct, I will definitely do this in future!

Oh I am currently on the Medtronic 780g but moving to the Ypsomed/libre 3 on Tuesday 🙂
