Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I'm a 52yo woman and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 years ago but there was no follow up, until I was admitted to hospital with chest pains last week.
My blood sugar was 29. My blood oxygen was low. After 5 days I came home with metformin and insulin. They never discovered what caused the chest pains or low oxygen.
I'm bedbound with chronic fibromyalgia pain and now obese.
I've got the hang of using the insulin, but have gone through loads of needles and test atrips trying to get a reading. Now I've given up.
My eyesight is really bad now (new specs on the way) and my hands are really sore and shaky from the fibro.
I've lived with anxiety, depression and PTSD for decades.

So there's the cheerful bit 😉 Look forward to getting to know you all! 🙂

Hi jackymax, so sorry to hear about what you've been through.

You really should have had some kind of follow up at least annually, what has your GP said about why this hasn't happened?

Has your eyesight been progressively getting bad or has there been a recent decline? Sometimes eyesight issues are due to your sugar levels and therefor getting that in check will be super helpful.

It really does sound like you need to speak with your GP and get a review done. I'd go as far as changing GP's if this can't be done for any reason.

Your more than welcome to reach out to us on the forum but please also feel free to give us a call on 0345 123 2399 for some more personalised support.

Hi Cherrelle, thanks for replying. 🙂

It's kind of my fault too as I don't really contact my GP. I really struggle with getting things done. Can't seem to focus or cope, then having to explain why I can't go to places, over and over again.

I think the diabetes dept. at the hospital are referring me to the community something. Memory sucks too lol. Because of me screwing up so many tests, I've not been able to test for a couple of days. Out of lancets and 2 strips left.

Eyesight has got progressively worse, but faster over the last year or so. I do notice the short term changes in swings too though.

Hope I'm making sense... brain fog lol

You make perfect sense! I live with Fibro too and have been where you are.

I know it can be a struggle to get people to understand what you're going through and then ask for help so you get stuck in a catch 22. It does sound like a referral to the community team would be helpful as they may be able to assess your situation as a whole and see if there's any additional support available.

Being bed bound, your GP may be able to offer a home visit so if you can give them a call it could really help.

Either way, we're here to support you every step of the way so do keep us up to date with how you're getting on.

Thank you 🙂
The people around me have no interest in understanding what ails me. 🙄
Spoke to GP today and got some lancets and test strips. Got a reading first try... it was 7.1 :D

Oh PS! - opticians do actually do home visits for bed-bound or even mobile but housebound folk so for goodness sake, ring yours and see what you can arrange. (said the woman who has been meaning to do just that for weeks ...... even though I'm still quite capable of walking into their shop!)

Hello! I am an amputee due to a lifetime of diabetes and there should be an optician near you that does home visits. If you are in North London or surrounding counties A1Opticians can help you.

If you are having difficulties with tests and injections you may qualify for district nurse visits. A couple that changed my dressings saw quite a few parents daily for BG testing and injections. I also encountered an HCA that did hospital shifts and home visits and she was more knowledgeable than a previous DSN of mine.
