Morning all

I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on January the 13th. I think and this will sound strange it may have been a blessing in disguise.

I changed my diet immediately and after the rather unpleasant first few days things settled down I set myself a goal to cycle 139 miles this June from my home town to Bournemouth, I had set this target anyway to raise money for prostate cancer which I sadly lost my dad to 2 years ago. What i didn't expect was that with low carbs diets eating right and cycling 50 plus miles a week how much the weight would just fall off. 20st 9lb on January. Today I'm at 18st 8lb I've gained muscle mass apparently as well which I guess explains the weeks where clothes were fitting better but the weight was staying stubbornly the same.

Looking forward to my next Hba1c test should be soon I hope, going to reintroduce running as well with couch to 5k as I heard a rumour running is good for weight loss as well, could be a myth though lol

Well Done on your weight loss and positive attitude.

Fantastic result, well done!!

After a brief moment of despair, I viewed my diagnosis as a positive and a MASSIVE wake up call so it's not strange at all.

I've kind of got back into running. I challenged myself years ago - absolutely hated it but did it anyway, so god knows why I think it's a good idea to start again!! Couch to 5k is a good place to start but make sure you have the right gear. Running is VERY hard on the joints so invest in a really good pair of trainers and socks. People forget socks but running socks, padded in all the right places, are also an essential bit of kit.

Good luck with the cycling, that's a fantastic challenge.

Good for you! - and presumably you'll be aware that you're more at risk of prostate cancer yourself since your dad had it, so I hope you've already started getting PSA tests - we run 'testing sessions' and sadly finding chaps in their 40s who 'only come along because their friends are' testing positive - and much like many other forms of cancer, the sooner it's discovered, the more that can usefully (Medically speaking) be done about it.

Will check with the nurse next time I see them

Fantastic result! My diabetes diagnosis was not unsurprising considering my weight and lifestyle choices. I've adopted a very low carbohydrate diet, less than 50g a day, combined with intermittent fasting on a Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I've lost 1.5 stone since 25th January. Remarkable what can be done, only a shame it took diabetes for me to make the changes.

Wow! Fantastic weight loss as well as an amazing reduction in HbA1c. Many congratulations. I am sure your post will inspire others who are newly diagnosed that with a bit of effort and the right advice you can turn things around. Very best of luck in maintaining your fantastic success.

Such a strange thing but diabetes may have saved my life p, my lifestyle was heading towards a heart attack, now I’m looking at replacing my keg with a six pack

Love it!
Yes, my diagnosis was the kick up the pants I needed to change my lifestyle and far from being less healthy now I have diabetes, I feel like I am actually more healthy because I have to think about everything I put in my mouth and is it good for me and in my case decide if it is worth injecting insulin for.

Wow that is absolutely amazing. Well done!

Can I ask if there is a particular low carb diet you are following? I am desperate to get my weight off having recently been diagnosed with type 2. I have managed to lose 8lbs in the past 4 weeks which I am pleased about but struggle as I seem to be eating the same things over and over.

Have you looked at this link, plenty of variety among the different meal plans or you can just follow the general principals keeping to your chosen carbs per meal which I prefer to think of it as or amount of carbs per day. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
