Hi all,
Last night Alex had a hypo after playing football for 40 minutes - he was 3.2 so had 3 x jelly babies and a biscuit. 15 minutes later tested again and 3.1 - so had the same jelly babies and a biscuit - 15 minutes later the same again! This went on for 1 xhour until finally we got him up to 4mmols! (i even spoke to heidie as i was so worried) - that has never happend before as his hypos treatment has always done the trick.
Any suggestions as to why all of a sudden it took an hour to stabilise him?
He had a pizza for dinner about 20 minutes before playing - so i am wondering whether the insulin hit too early for the pizza and then created the hypo?:confused:Bev

Hiya Bev

I've already answered on the other email group. x

I think from time to time we all have those hypos that just won't come up, they can be really frustrating and very scary.

As you say, it could be that the insulin hit too early, the exercise would have made it even more efficient so that could be what happened. Where did he have his injection before eating, if it was in a limb that was used a lot in the exercise, eg leg, that could have contributed too.
And of course, the hot weather isn't helping any of us out at the moment when it comes to hypos!
How are his numbers now?

Hi aymes and adrienne,

Adrienne has explained that we should give the jelly babies and then wait 15 minutes - but i didnt know that - our dsn said give it altogether! So i suspect that has been the problem but coupled with the pizza and the exercise!
I will delay the biscuit in future and inject after the pizza.
His levels are ok today - so looks like it was a combination of the lot last night!🙂Thanks.🙂Bev

This sounds a bit like what happened to me last week bev - my usual fix of jelly babies didn't help and I continued to drop, so more JBs, biscuits and sweet tea - also took around an hour, normally I'm fixed in a few minutes. I couldn't explain it, so I guess these things just happen (thankfully, rarely in my personal experience). Very scary. Perhaps you have found the reason, though, so may be able to prevent in future.🙂 Play hime some Kate Bush, it will relax and soothe him, and give him a good appreciation of music and female beauty...🙂

Hi Bev
If I could through my 2cents worth in as well..

About a year/18 months after I was diagnosed I went from actrapid to humalog lispro as that was the quickest acting at the time.

One thing that my DSN said to me at the time was NOT to do any activity within at least an hour after taking any amount of lispro.

She was right! As I found out just a couple of days later.. 【ツ】

It still happens from time to time, especially as I live in Spain and as Aymes mentioned the heat kinda doubles the affect.

Since you have an insulin injection, coupled with heat and 40 mins playing football you have 3 things that will all contribute to blood sugars lowering?

I know it is easier said than done but I would imagine that if we stand back and think about the scenario we would all do it slightly differently. However try telling that to you lad..

Please note that their is no criticism, as I was lucky enough to have had my childhood/teens without diabetes and I applaud all you parents having to deal with a child with diabetes.

Thanks all!
Mike - thanks for your input aswell, i hadnt really thought about waiting for a bit before playing! It does make sense though , but like you say try telling an 11 year old not to play football!
I will certainly keep it in mind for future reference though! Thanks.:DBev

Thanks for the advice Northerner - but i dont want to soil my boys mind with such filth! HE DOESNT LIKE ELEPHANTS AND HE NEVER WANTS TO MARRY ONE OR HEAR THEIR MUSIC!
p.s. Alex's dad went to see her in concert in 1979 at the liverpool empire - her first tour - and he has just informed me that he has the tour programme and inside is .....one of the flowers she threw to the audience - after she had kissed it! Mhwahahahahahhahahahahahahahah...............:DBev

Thank goodness Alex has a father who can shield him from your sadly delusional distortions of reality, bev...:D

Actually, you have got me thinking...if your hubby likes KB enough to keep her flower and programme...and (stay with me on this, you'll see the logic)...he finds you sufficiently attractive to marry you...then you are either utterly gorgeous as KB is - or you are an elephant, as you assert!!!!! Which is it to be bev, which is it to be????:confused:

Hahahahaha It's nice to be back! Just been in Center Parcs for the week with other family. Bev, I had a quick drop when I went swimming, and a bit slow to raise it again. had breakfast, nd slighlty less insulin to allow for excrcise. Tested before I got in: 11, got out to test about 3/4 hour later and was 2.9! As eveyone says, I think the heat makes quite a bit of difference. I usually try to allow an hour after eating and taking insulin before excercising.

Hi, Mikeinspain (lucky thing!)

Hi Runner,
Which centre parcs did you go to? We used to go to them a lot when mine were younger - great place for active children! I think our favourite was the one up in cumbria - it was snowing and the place looked lovely and very tranquil!:DBev

Bev !!!!! Northerner just threw down The Gauntlet and you didnt react !!!!!! that was fighting talk !!!! 😱😱😱😱 He called you an Elephant !!

Bev is a gorgeous blond, I've met her. Can't say KB is gorgeous or blond and I have yet to meet a buxom blond elephant either !!! So Bev is completely unique and lovely🙂

Phew! Thanks Adrienne - very kind words indeed! Just off to polish me trunk!😱

Anne- Marie, i think my silence on the matter was far more powerful than any reply i could have made!:DBev x
