as from this Friday face masks are to be worn in shops how ever scientists are now arguing that they may offer very little protection as the covid virus can actually be carried on the mask in a sort of fashion. this is getting like a catch 22 situation.

From my way of thinking wearing a mask doesn't offer much protection from getting the virus but does offer loads of protection for anyone with the virus spreading it..on the sims its amazing how far a sneeze or cough travels and also even when your talking naturally, minute drops of spittle still comes out your mouth and a mask will help stop the spread that way.

Not being a scientist I really have no idea how effective they are. But I have been wearing them for weeks when shopping at supermarkets or other shops, or when walking along busy streets. So I don't mind wearing them at all, if it helps even a little bit.

Well, I dutifully wore a mask to the butcher's this morning, My butcher is elderly and a tad deaf (and wasn’t wearing a mask) and there’s a constant hum from the refrigeration units. I found that instead of a clearly enunciated discussion from a safe distance, about what I wanted, I had to get much closer to the counter and raise my voice, so I don’t think either of us was any better off.
I can see they’re some use in a supermarket, to stop you getting sneezed on by passing customers, but in an old fashioned across the counter encounter, where I was the only customer, there really wasn’t much benefit.

My understanding is that wearing them all day without changing them is likely to not be very hygienic but for most of us popping to the shop (even for doing a big shop) it’s no risk to wear one. Just leave it alone and dispose of it or wash it after each use. It offers less protection for the wearer than for others but if the majority of people are wearing them then it will help the community along with social distancing and good hygiene. Masks will never be the answer on their own but as part of the story they are useful.

I didn't realise how much i lip read! I don't have a problem with my hearing but when i can't see peoples faces properly i'm finding it a tad difficult to respond to what they are saying. Also, i miss looking at faces/expressions. I do see the need for face masks though but hope its not for too long.

I've been wearing one for months in the shops as I look after my mother so I'm careful. It's seems so contagious but I didn't completely buy the spreading by touching surfaces.Somebody put it in a way the other day that made me think, they said think about the breath that you can visibly see in winter, well that water vapour is there all of the time but is obvious when it condensates outside in cold temperatures, and you do see that it projects quite a distance.
I think in an enclosed indoor setting such as a shop, when covid becomes wide spread in communities that it will be lingering in the air in quite a volume

Staff at Blackburn Royal today were were all wearing masks, but they made an absolute mockery of it by at least a quarter of staff wearing the mask covering their mouths but not noses. I was appalled. Needless to say, I have sent a snotty message to express my views

I had to speak to my mums carers that were doing that,I did feel sorry for a couple of them that said they were doing it as the masks make their glasses steam up,which is true, but I said sorry this needs to be done the right way so we're ready for when it's widespread

Face protection will reduce the wearer spreading the virus but unless the mask is correctly face fitted and Offers correct level of protection It will offer very little protection against contracting the virus

The steaming up of glasses is understandable to a degree, but none of the staff I saw were wearing glasses.

Apparently it you put a thin layer of shaving foam on your lenses then wipe off, it's supposed to stop your glasses steaming up, if anyone wants to try it and report back 😎

I discovered that if you allow your glasses to slip down your nose a bit they don’t steam up so much. Makes them less comfortable unfortunately, but at least you can see!

Can't breath wearing my mask and my specs steam up big time. I hates it. On the other hand I think we should all be wearing them and should have been from the start. Went to library, all really strict, rubber gloves, disinfecting and masks, then come out and the town is heaving and loads of people obviously oblivious. Drinking eating and chatting outside cafes, rubbing shoulders in all the shops etc. A mask reminds people!

I was trying to collection my meds from the chemist in Tesco, based on where I was stood, on the markers and with the mask on, busy loud space I had to say my name 5 time’s.
It’s Phoebe, she said Fifa, bebe and then stevie! It’s hard work.
I’ve worked out the glasses thing but the first time in M&S I couldn’t see at all ha!

Two tips:-

Lots of masks have a metal strip that your supposed to press with you fingers so it forms the shape of your nose.

If you still fog up then put one drip of washing up liquid on the tip of your finger and massage it onto the inside surface of your glass lenses. To remove the smears hold them in front of a boiling kettle a few seconds and the steam will clear them.
Let them dry without touching them.

Us mad motorcyclists do this to the visors on our full face helmets. Nothing worse than 150 down the bypass when you can't see.

I see a lot of people, almost exclusively elderly, wearing masks over mouth only.

@PaulG you need a pinlock visor insert.

It's gonna be interesting at work from tomorrow. We're still waiting for guidance to see if we have to wear them or not. The visors issued were uncomfortable for a whole shift. I've got a nice collection going now and have been wearing them in shops to get used to them. As long as I tuck the edge under my glasses they don't steam up.

Snotty message @mikeyB? :D:D:D About masks and noses. Made me chuckle!
