Having one of those days

Sorry to hear you are still struggling Phoebe.
I spoke too soon and levels the past few days have been up again in double figures and increasing Levemir and feeding in corrections of NR every few hours is keeping me in an unbelievably straight line between 9 and 11 but seems to ignore the corrections. I stopped my steroid inhaler last night as I didn't feel I was breathing any better after 2 weeks of using it and want to see if it that which is causing me problems with my BG levels. No sign of improvement so far.

I got so frustrated on Sat afternoon that I was naughty and ate a white chocolate chunky KitKat.... decided that if my levels were going to be high when I was being good, I would give them something to be high about!!... Won't be doing that again! Didn't enjoy it at all and my heart was pounding and vision wobbly and just felt ill, even though I bolussed for it. East enough to see the spike on my Libre from it!

Sorry to read that you are also struggling with your readings @SB2015.

I am half wondering if I have a mild dose of Covid. Breathing problems, aches and pains and occasional upset stomach. Been like this for a fortnight thinking it was asthma and aches from doing heavy manual labour but now starting to think it is something other than those.

If you think it could be get the test, I’ve had it and it’s painless and easy, we did home kits but it’s faster to do the drive in if you have a local one you can get too.
We’ve not had it, doctor suggested as my daughter had a sore Throat and Temperature.

Sorry you are still having problems at the moment @PhoebeC

It seems that there are quite a few of us being visited by that pesky Diabetes Fairy at present.
Last night was the first night I managed to stay below 10 for ages and that is only because I am back to running at 130%. Still no idea why.

Did you discuss with your DSN about changing your basal insulin. With Levemir changes take effect more quickly, and you can split it to a daytime and night time dose, each of which can be changed without impacting the other (too much).
I did mention changing basal, the lantus often stings which is why I try not to do it in my stomach, it’s not nice at all.
She said she’d never heard of that, but I know a few others on here who have said the same.
I’m so over it now, I’ve had 3 good days in 3 weeks and some real c**p ones

I get occasional stinging (maybe once every 2-3 days) with both Levemir and NovoRapid, so changing basal insulin may not solve that problem. I have come to the conclusion in my case, it is just the injection location. Sometimes I don't feel the needle go in at all and sometimes it is quite painful but injecting the insulin is fine and other times the insulin going in really stings even when the needle insertion was no problem at all. No real rhyme or reason to it for me. I use stomach, thighs and buttocks and there doesn't seem to be much difference in frequency of problems between them... had some right blebs and bruises on my bot and stomach recently though!
I really do like my Levemir though from the point of view of being able to make more or less instant changes for the injection period ahead so if I have had a very active day, dialling it back one or even a half unit overnight can rally help to keep things in range, or if I ate late I can up it by one unit to deal with the protein release overnight. My daytime needs seem to be much less variable for some reason.

For a DSN I am amazed that she has not heard of Levemir and the ability to split it.
Can you ask to see a different DSN?

I know my jabs used to sting on occasions, especially when I had the needles changed from the BD Microfine.

Keep asking the questions until you are sorted.

I don't think she's been a DSN very long if she hasn't heard of Lantus stinging, either! I blamed it on the pen needles to begin with cos I had to have a different make for the original Lantus pens which took a 'click on' needle rather than a screw on which the Novopens took.

What was it though which she claimed she'd never heard of? Both me and SB have interpreted the remark differently!

I've never had any real trouble getting different brands of whatever prescribed, as long as I had a good reason for asking for a change and my God - you have.

Sorry it was the lantus stinging she hadn’t heard of, which I know a few of us have had issues with. It was better than the insulatard which I was on before, that hurt loads and stunk so bad and just wasn’t very good at all.

Today will be day 3, no impact yet on those higsh 1am, only thing that works is taking the novo as a corrective does, I can’t go to sleep at 14! So I have to do it, how it goes from 7 to 14 like that I don’t know

Phoebe - ring the ruddy woman again. Tell her this nightly occurrence isn't acceptable and several of your personal friends have told you that they have had very similar problems in the past and told you what worked for them.

This friend right here, will willingly give her my contact details and permission/information to contact both my GP and hospital D clinic records to confirm what I'm saying.

A lot of HCPs in the past (and remember it was over 10 years ago when this happened to me) fought off changing people from one jab a day of Lantus to two a day of Levemir because they erroneously believed we wouldn't be easily able to cope with the extra necessity of another jab. My God! - no no NO - one more flippin jab a day is neither here nor there in comparison to feeling constantly sodding suicidal cos you can't ever RELAX! You're always having to do at least one extra jab as it is - and forced to do it when you should be asleep. That is ridiculous.

The DSN has to do something about this. You will be exhausted.
Can you contact your consultant? See a different DSN?
Send in @trophywench .

I spoke to her this morning. She is referring me to the hospital team, I think she said Oldham. So hopefully they will have some answers.
I’m bored of it now, like beyond.she said she didn’t think 14 was too high to be dangerous, but if it’s Nearly half the day Or at least 6-8 hours, nearly every night for 3 weeks I think it is really bad actually!

Well thank God she is referring you to somewhere that knows more about diabetes than she does!

Keep checking to make sure she has. We can ring our surgery and go through to the office staff, who can look and see when referrals were sent, and they will instigate a reminder to the hosp if the patient hasn't heard anything and they agree you should have heard by now.

Just catching up with this. How frustrating and disappointing Phoebe. At last a referral, that’s a relief. I’m another one that can’t believe she didn’t know about Lantus stinging...or considers 14 not high! Once you mention these things to her all she has to do is ask a colleague or google.

Referral should get through quickly is she’s efficient...it’s not like it has to be posted. Might be worth contacting the hospital dept tomorrow to see if they’ve received it. They may even chase for you, or advise you anyway. It’s worth the few minutes for a phone call.

Glad she's referred you. Let us know how you get on.

So last night, I was 8.8 before bed, then 11.0 just before midnight, then it’s stayed steady, dropped down into range and I woke up 7.7 at half 7. So this is night 5 of the change, maybe it’s worked?!
This is what annoys me about diabetes you can do the same thing for weeks and then suddenly with no other changes it changes ha!

Through my own recent experiences and from reading a lot of different threads on here it still amazes me how out of touch these "Specialists" are and it seems to go from the top to the bottom..tongue in cheek they should scrap all diabetic nurses/Specialists and instead just send them here, I know where I feel safer thats for sure.

No, don't send anyone from my clinic, clearly I've got em all well trained by now.

No actually, well over a decade now, when the new consultant and DSNs wanted to introduce 'carb counting and dose adjustment' courses for us lot and the CCG said DAFNE was far to expensive to expect them to fund - 2 DSNs and one dietician - let's call them Lyn, Kim and Sue - offered to pay for their own accommodation and travelling down to Bournemouth to be trained to train us, at BDEC. Kim's now the manager, Lyn retired on health grounds and dunno about Sue. But anyway Dr S is still there and got a mate Dr G plus 2 new younger DSNs and everybody is now singing from the same hymnsheet, which the patients happily join in!

Ha! I know that ‘rage carbs’ feeling. And the remorse that immediately follows. Sorry to hear you are both having a tough time.

So Monday night / Tuesday morning I tested and it was raising to 14 so I Got up to get it under control, correction, waited for it to work, correction and waited. About 2.30am I went to bed
Last night I tested around midnight again and it was 8 woke up this morning and it’s 17.1!
I’m so fed up with not sleeping or sleeping but at these levels and being tired and feeling rotten all day!
