Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all
I have been a type 2 for so long I can't even remember when I first got it. Possibly about 10 years. My control is up and down. When first diagnosed I was overweight by about 3 st and managed to gradually lose the weight and get myself fit walking then a Wii and then the gym. I am under a lot of personal stress at home and have quite a high stress job and work shifts, which doesn't help with the control let's face it. Currently at home for 12 weeks, hence although frequently use the DiabetesUK site, just decided to log into forum- one of those ' jobs I have been meaning to do. I'm on metaphormin, dapagliflozin and glipizide, my GP said no where else to go apart from insulin. I did do the Newcastle diet for 6 weeks a year ago helped me get things back under control then next bloods it'll be up. Gone from 56 to 76..... pain in hoop. Hope everyone is keeping well

Welcome to the forum @Auntylol.

I am glad that joining has reached the top of your list of jobs to do.
Sorry to hear that things have been a bit up and down for you, and that your situation is so stressful.

I know that a lot of people on here with T2 find it useful to self test, even though the required test strips are unlikely to be funded for you. This can help you to find out how specific foods impact on your glucose levels. A record of how many carbohydrates are eaten, alongside the BG before and about two hours after the meal can give you and you Nurse a lot of info to work with, to make adjustments to your routines.

Keep in touch.

Hi, luckily I live in Scotland, so all my equipment, meters, jabby sticks and strips are supplied. I am on a lot of other medication as well for other issues, high BP, cholesterol, osteoperenia, and anaemia. I struggle with my diet which I think is a lot to do with the mix of meds, but also been put on a FODmap diet and have discovered both gluten and lactose intolerant.

Great to hear that you get your equipment provided. Testing can give you the tools to help you make adjustments. This article is a useful resource on how to make good use of this.

Another article that people have found useful is reading Maggie Davey's letter

Let us know ho you get on.

Hello @Auntylol, and so good that you have joined us on the forum.

You have really done well in controlling your T2 over the years, and loosing 3stn is an amazing achievement.
It is very difficult though to maintain control through stressful times, and as you will see if you read around the forum, many of us struggle.
As @SB2015 suggests a read of Maggie Davey's letter may provide some inspiration.

As you found previously, exercise is also important and there are not so many options during isolation.
I see that you have a WII though. I have one of these. It was long forgotten in the cupboard, but is now dusted off and in daily use. Although a bit old style I am enjoying it and trying out some different exercises - and pleasantly surprised how much scores improve over a week or so. Are you using yours currently?

I hope you find the forum useful, and please keep posting and let us know how things are going.

Welcome to the forum @Auntylol

Hope you can find a way through your stresses, and use this weird time to have a bit of a diabetes reset.

After 10 years you will have built up a huge understanding of how yoir diabetes operates, but there are always still new things to learn and new diabetes ‘curve balls’ to adapt to in this game!

Your anaemia may be playing havoc with your HbA1c test - have they ever mentioned using an alternative? Fructosamine is one that sometimes gets mentioned.

Hi,
I gave the Wii to my grandsons, but I have an xbox360, to be honest I think I preferred the Wii, I'm lucky in that I live on a farm and can walk up an old drove road in total isolation. My biggest issue just now is motivation,I broke my wrist and ribs over a year ago and getting back into habit of going to gym was hard, especially as my daughter was my gym buddy- it was our time, but that has stopped due to her currently being in a domestic abuse situation. Hence the stress and anxiety...x

Hi
Interesting about the anaemia, I'd hope my Dr would take it into account. I'm on cyanocobalamin and have Ferris sulphate.

You are dealing with a wide variety of difficult issues for you and your daughter.
Can you link up with her and do the same exercise class online.
I know it is not the same but it could be a way of sharing and having shared goals which might motivate both of you.

How lovely to be on a farm at present. Fresh air makes so much difference. Enjoy your walks.

Keep in touch.
