I am trying Roy Taylor's Newcastle Diet to loose weight and possibly, reverse the diabetes.
Am using a selection of Slim Fast, Shake & Slim and Almased shakes.
Are there any pro's or con's ?

Cons are lots of pooping I’m afraid

Most of the shakes are high in carbs and sugar too

Are you on meds at all.

I’d be talking to the gp really as this is under 1,000 a day

I'm starting it probably end of next week. There is a pamphlet you can get on the Newcastle site if you can find the link, that gives some alternatives to slimfast (apparently both tesco and asda do one). I've tried slimfast before but only really liked the strawberry, so I'm doing a bit of research this week and buying the asda and tesco versions to see if they are better. There's also some brand from australia mentioned that seems to have been quite popular during the Newcastle study.

My initial thought for prepping for the diet, was to make sure I understood what works for the meal I should have for dinner. In terms of portion sizes and calories etc. I don't just want to do the 800 calorie diet, I want to do a low carb 800 calorie diet. So I might end up not taking the shake route and instead just eating veggies in some form and taking supplements for whats missing.

Good luck on it though, I plan on posting my progress in the weight loss part of the forum. Just wanted to get prepared properly before I do it.

Oh and the con seems to be transitioning to a "normal" eating arrangement after the diet. You can read the figures from the study in Roy Taylors book (recommend getting it if you haven't), but as with most diets, once people reach their target weight, a good number then revert to unhealthy eating and gain a lot of it back. I'm planning my transition back into low carb so that I've got a more reasonable diet when it comes time to maintain rather than lose weight.

Just pondering the Newcastle diet as a means of getting back on track, so thanks for posting your question @Gardener I've looked at the other thread too. I've tried Slimfast in the past and one of the cons with using that for the Newcastle is the very sweet nature of the bars and shakes - my view is that this doesn't help those with a sweet tooth who are trying to cut out sugary things. Perhaps the Tesco and Asda alternatives are less sweet but perhaps not - is the Almased very sweet? And as @zoombapup mentions, the transition back to normal eating can be problematic. Dr Mosley's 8-week blood sugar diet book may help instead of using shakes, and there is a good cookery book by Dr David Cavan - I've used several recipes from that and they are quick and tasty. I see Prof Taylor has just published a recipe book so I might see what that's like. Good luck!

The Michael Moseley book read in conjunction with something like Allen Carr - Bad Sugar, Good Sugar might be enough to kick the sugar habit most of the people walking the face of the Earth seem to have.
I’ve also added in the 30 Day Alcohol Experiment which although it’s clearly written for kicking booze it’s also applicable to sugars and carbs and any other substance.

What I’m learning is that although we react to external stimulus - a shock diagnosis for example - and although there are plenty of very quick fixes out there we also need to look within ourselves to see what’s driving the patterns and habits we have. Only by doing that can we unpick them. And only by unpicking then can we move beyond them.

Absolutely agree with you there Colin. I see this as a "lifestyle" issue and of course keeping the same lifestyle seems like the wrong way to tackle it. Changing diet appears to have the most significant impact on the condition, so that's definitely the main thing. But also tackling the things that push you to prefer the poor diet is another factor. Honestly in my case it was partly ignorance of the function of carbs in diet that was leading me to eat lots of grapes etc. But that is in part fed by misinformation on diet by media and other vested interests. So I don't beat myself up too much about it now.
