Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello, I have just being given the big D type 2, first week in December. All the Christmas goodies have gone, the Ringtons man got a free Christmas box, so did members of the Heart Club. Thorntons will go bust, and I am facing Christmas on a restricted diet. I went to the Heart Club Christmas Buffet, the other members tucked into a brilliant meal, I had a no sugar, low salt oat biscuit with water, still. I will not let it win, I will beat it, its my thing for 2020.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. That’s a rotten time of year to be told the news. But fear not, have a look at the recipes section on this forum, or the thread 'what did you eat yesterday’. A lot of members on here have thought up or discovered some excellent and tasty treats that sit well with Type 2 diabetes, so have a look and get creating!
 
Hi and welcome. Can I suggest you have a good look around the site and then ask us any questions you may have, we are all more than happy to help you. On diagnosis we all panic and think we can’t eat anything again but it’s not quite like that but we certainly need to adapt the way we think about food.
If you don’t mind letting us know your HbA1c result and if you have been out on any medication that would help us tailor our advice to you.

An oat biscuit?
Why?
You are a type two - you can't cope with carbs which are sugars and starches.
Oats are grain, aka cereals, so mostly starch.
You could eat any meat or fish or seafood - so lay on the turkey, ham and salmon, stock up on cheese (there is a recipe for low carb crackers if you seek it out on the internet) if you find sugar free jelly, frozen berries (look on the back of the packs for the carb count -but most are under 11 percent) get the eggs and cream and vanilla essence for real custard, and maybe a tin of mandarin segments if you choose an orange jelly - or try blackcurrent and add blueberries - fill up your trolley with salad stuff, and things for stir fries - mushrooms, aubergines the outer stalks of celery work well, sweet peppers, bean sprouts, courgettes, you can make chips from celeriac, and cauliflower is very useful, chopped fine for a rice substitute, mashed to replace potatoes.
The way to eat is to check that your levels do not spike after eating - two hours from the start of the meal, and I found it very easy to get back to normal numbers.
If you hanker for mince pies, you can use a 'mug cake' - recipes online, and add just enough mincemeat to make it seen real - and then cream. There are lots of alternatives which are actually better than the original - though now everything can be substituted. However - after a while tastes change, and super sweet cloying stuff can become quite revolting.

You will find that each person’s experience of Diabetes is slightly different, and different people (like @Drummer) can be particularly sensitive to carbohydrate. There’s no need to worry though, it’s all about discovering your own individual tolerance and choosing to eat in a way that suits your body as well as your tastebuds 🙂

A BG meter is a brilliant tool to help you do this, and a systematic framework like Alan S’s ‘test review adjust’ allows you to make small adjustments to your diet and see generally how much, which types of carbs (and at what times of day) work well for you.

Good morning,
I hope you had a good Christmas, I was not well Christmas Eve, I did a no no, still I am learning, However next Christmas will be different, I found the Diabetes Uk Christmas what to eat this morning by chance and I have printed it off, also I have the help of all the people who have replied to my introduction. It did seem a bit odd as some things where missing and the meal size was smaller, still.Oh in passing the sister on A&E says I must not laugh at the Doctor, its better than crying and the news does well I have had worse.

first a Happy Christmas, second, I spoke to a woman in Sainsbury's whilst shopping, she was most helpful about how to get round things, but she knew nothing about the forum. I must admit I feel on occasion like yourself, frustrated, I was taken of the Aspirin and placed on Clobidogeral by the stoke consultant, and the Cardiac consultant has me on Atovastatin and Ronaldazine, its a killer and can cause diabetes, deafness and blindness, I take 30 tablets a day, 10 on a morning, 10 mid afternoon and 10 at night. I am going back in to get balanced this week.

As you have mentioned the heart club I assume you also have cardiac problems, apologies if I am wrong.
You might have to adapt slightly what we have found fine for us with T2 .
Personally I find that the menus suggested over on the main site to high in carbohydrates for me, bu5 the recipes produced by people on this forum are lower in carbohydrates and tasty

You will find a link there to the SD Codefree glucose meter which uses the cheapest testing strips we know of £8 for a pot of 50.
