Little story for you. I asked my husband to pop in the pharmacy and get some strips for my Glucomen Aero tester as I like to make sure I have plenty in, I gave him the tub with the name on so he wouldn’t get it wrong and told him they are approximately £14 (slightly cheaper on line but not when you have paid postage). He rang me at work to say he had got them and they were nearly £23, I asked him to take them back as I’m not paying that. He rang again to say they wouldn’t take them back as they had left the pharmacy and by law they couldn’t be re-sold and would have to go in the bin. I rang the pharmacy and spoke to the manager, he said they were having difficulty getting hold of strips and this had pushed the price up and that they would not take them back, I was p.....d off big time.
Got home after work to find that the strips were the wrong ones, they were for Glucomen LX and a completely different size. I went to the pharmacy and explained the problem and that I had spoken to the manager earlier, immediately their backs were up. They said it was my husbands fault because he had held his hand over the label. A little debate ensued when I explained that in fact he had given the tub to the assistant who walked off with it and came back with the new box so in fact they were at fault. They gave me a refund and then I paid for the correct ones which were, would you believe it £14.25.
Not sure if the tale from the pharmacist about there being a shortage was the truth or a load of baloney, personally I think I believe the latter.
I think I may well invest in the Codefree meter as these strips are way too expensive.
Sometimes these places know exactly how to make you feel as though you are making a fuss and darned uncomfortable to boot when they are the ones at fault.
Whinge finished now folks xx

Doesn’t it make you grrr. I think they gave you a load of old bull.... too.
I would go for the Codefree too as the strips are much cheaper.

Yes I think when these strips are gone I will get one. It’s only that I was given the tester from one of the DNs where I work, I hadn’t realised how expensive the strips were, and yes I’m sure the pharmacy were taking the mick 😡😡

Test strips for many of the meters are very expensive.
It sounds as if the Codefree would make sense.

It is definitely a grrrrrrrr moment when others don’t seem to support people
who are working hard to look after themselves.

I agree and the assistant even had the cheek to ask how often I was testing!!

When I landed in NHS England I was given a Tee2 meter, presumably cos they are cheap, and prescription for the strips. As a Libre user, I don’t often use strips. I’ve discovered that the manufacturer, Spirit Healthcare sell the strips for £7.30 a pot. The meter comes free. No bells and whistles, and I think the finger pricker was made by Airfix, but it all works just fine. Takes bog standard lancets. No memory, as far as I can see, but the Libre does that anyway.

Wow that would be brilliant, thank you so much. At work at the mo but will message you when I get home xx

Well done for sticking to your guns.

Do not know if it is Brexit or my Surgery playing silly beggars, but they have cut my test strips down to 4 x 50 in any 8 week period = 200

Now my calculation, a minimum for 4 x
tests a day equals 4 x 7 x 8 = 224 , not accounting for any duff readings

I was 5 pots, 250

Do not understand their reasoning

That’s interesting, I can understand the nhs trying to cut back on things but there are things that simply can’t be cut back on as it would be counter productive.

Haven’t heard of that one Mikey but I’ll look it up. I checked in our stores at work and we have 6 different sorts of tester but they are all Glucomen and if the strips for the LX are nearly £23 I feel sorry for the people being offered them, think I’ll have a word with the nurses.

The Tee 2 is the one from Spirit healthcare - I acquired one recently - bought the meter with kit and 160 test strips, plus lancets for under £40, post free.

Hi Sue I also use the GlucoMen Areo as well as the Accucheck Mobile, I also have a Glucomen Areo 2K which tests for ketones also. If you have not done so already, phone Minarini up 0800 243667 and register your meter with them, a little white lie tell them you have just received it from the hospital but make sure you have the meter number when you call. They will offer you the newest version 2K FOC and complete with test strips for both BGL and ketones, nothing to lose if you need test strips also PM me only too glad to help. P.S, you will need to register on line, no big deal it will give you access to free batteries and home monitoring diaries amongst other goodies, hope this helps.xxx

That’s very good to know Ted, thank you x

My surgery gave me a GlucoRX Q meter and I've been getting my lancets and test strips on prescription, but I suspect that with my Hba1c at 41 at my review last month and not on medication I may have any further prescription requests declined. If so should I stick with my current meter or look for a model that's cheaper to run? Would welcome opinions.

Perhaps Google and see how much they are, particularly the strips and if too expensive I would suggest getting a cheaper one. Think that’s what I’ll do when I have used mine up

Personally I think it depends on a few things.
The price as obviously what you can afford is important .
How many times you test., it’s the cost again.
Imo though I feel it’s important for person who is not on meds that can cause hypo’s to self test even if it’s only to keep an eye on things, unlike being on insulin they do not need all the bells and whistles that some more expensive to self fund meters have.
It’s up to to whether or not you economise on lancets .

I hope your practice is more enlightened and will keep on prescribing them.
