Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello all,

I have recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. They said slow on set... I have been running at a High BG level for 3 months now since I first realised it was high, but possibly longer. They started me on levmir 5 units and I’m now taking 13 units daily in the morning. That has now been increased to 13 units in the morning and currently 6 units 12 hours after but rising daily untill my BG level is between 5-6 in the morning. I am starting Nova rapid tomorrow as been waiting for it to be prescribed, I will be taking his before my evening meal. I am currently doing my bloods 4 X daily.

I would like some advice and some answers to the questions below... please

Could they have Mis diagnosed me?

Bloods are varying with incilin very rarely have they been Lower than 8 normally 10+ 15+ And even 20+...

As soon as I eat normally food it increases but it puts it through the roof with a meal / chocolate bar

I’m 25 years old, 6 ft 3 and expected weight for my age and height.

I have no ketones when I have checked them it’s always been 0.3-0.4 unless I’ve not done it when they may have been high.

I used to get sickness, fatigue, dizziness when I did excerise.

Blurred visions and headaches

Do you think I have type 1 or possibly type 2?

Thanks in advance

Hello @ScrewRM . Welcome to the forum. I guess you must be really worried atm , however you have found us and we can help with info and cyber support. So please ask all the questions you need to about diabetes as we have some really knowledgeable people on here.

I assume that specific blood tests have been done to check how much insulin your pancreas is producing or if you have certain antibodies to beta cells in your pancreas and that’s how come they diagnosed T1 or LADA ( latent autoimmune disease in adults) its like a slow onset T1 .

T1 and T2 are managed /treated differently due to different causes, no one type is more severe than the others if that is what you are worried about.
It’s going to be a steep learning curve for you at first but you will get there, honest.

Please don’t worry about the amount of insulin, though I have T2 I am on insulin, it is literally a case of you need the amount of insulin you need.

T1 or LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults) is like a slow onset T1 both are autoimmune and are not caused by lifestyle or being overweight.

What usually happens is a person is diagnosed with T2 mostly because they are adult, may be tubby etc and they later turn out to haveLADA or T1 because the tablets , lifestyleand dietary changes did not work so the other tests were done.

They start us out very cautiously on insulin as they don’t want to bring our levels down too quickly also though they have a formula to go by, they don’t really know how much Insulin we need as we are all different in this respect.

I am no expert in anything but my own diabetes but you will find once you are on Novorapid, your post meal levels will gradually start to come down. I do find it a little strange that your Novorapid (bolus Insulin) is only for your dinner, but as I said earlier I am only an expert in my own diabetes.

Hi and welcome. Has anyone talked to you about carb counting and how to adjust your insulin for that and exercise?

Thanks for the response so far,
My HbA1c level was 64 when I had first bloods done.. and my BG level are consistently over 10-20.
I have a diabetic eye test next week.. someone said about novorapid before my evening meal is odd? I’m assuming the slow releasing incilin is not keeping it down? What tests can I expect to be done and will I get an official diagnosis?
I have it on a hospital discharge letter...
and I got my prescription exception card today so I can claim back all the money I’ve spend on prescriptions The last few weeks...

Thanks everyone for your helpful answers

What is odd about Novorapid only before evening meal is that normally it would be before every meal.

Welcome @ScrewRM 🙂
I think everyone else has already answered your question about being type 1. We quite often have people diagnosed with type 2 when they really have type 1, but I've never heard of it happening the other way round.

(I edited this post to delete a bit because the one I responded to has been moved)
