Cold feet

I am pretty fed up with having cold feet all the time now I have the dreaded D . I used to wear sandals from about April to September but my feet are now cold even in very hot weather in trainers :( does everyone suffer like this?

Mine are only cold if and when I don't exercise, as long as I keep taking my walks they are fine. It can be quite a motivator 'cos if my feet are cold I'm usually cold, and I hate being cold.
It's an absolute pain because before diagnosis I was always warm, even in winter, I would be stoating about in a t-shirt, it had to be in mid to low single figures before I even put on a jumper or fleece.
Maybe it's because I have downsized nearly four stone :D not enough blubber to keep me warm anymore!
Hmmm...... nah, it's more likely c**p circulation.

Am I the only person about who doesn't mind having cold feet?

I hate mine to be too warm! I wander about in bare feet all year round. It has to be freezing before I start complaining.

I do sympathise with those who get cold extrmities, though. My mum used to go dead white down her fingers with Raynaud's Phenomenon in cold conditions. She had a fairly mild case, but did have to be careful in cold weather.

My feet are so cold nearly 12 months of the year that my toes go blue and painful. This is due to my disability.

Cold feet here too. It's good for making hubby move over in bed though!🙄

Isn't 'his' warm bit on the mattress lovely? - tis in our house anyway (my husband's, not Kate's ! :D )

He tends to run hot. So does the GMNT. It's all that testoserone, I swear! Nice to snuggle with when I'm having a fibro cold flush!

My feet are absolutely FREEZING since I was diagnosed. I usually go barefoot in the house, but I am trying to get used to wearing slippers, and I've ordered some cosy socks which I hope will help. I don't mind *cold* feet, but at the moment, when I go to bed my feet feel as if I've been standing in snow.

I usually have a shower every night just before bed, the up side being that my feet are then warm when I go to bed and it makes it easier for me to drop off to sleep.

Thanks, I'll try that.

I have no idea why this has got so bad since I was diagnosed and started reducing my carb intake!

Suggest talking to yr doc about this. Just from personal experience & looking back, I quite suddenly started getting cold feet a few years ago, and it seems now that this was an early sign of peripheral artery disease (PAD/PVD) - atherosclerosis in the leg.

Of course yours may have a completely different cause - it could be many things - but I see from yr first posts that you have raised cholesterol and BP, which are risk factors for PAD along with raised BG, amplified if you smoke. So worth getting checked out. If it is the problem then the recommendations will probably be for stuff people should be doing anyway: stop smoking if that's relevant; statin to control cholesterol; managing BG and BP; "heart healthy" eating; exercise; weight loss.

Thanks for the heads up. I was put on statins as soon as my blood test came back, and am on them for another couple of months till my next blood test. Gave up smoking 30 years ago. Obviously I've been told to lose weight, but doing it by lowering my carbohydrate intake was emphasised. I'm still waiting for an appointment with the diabetic team, so I need to chase that up anyway.

Sorry @AnnW just picked up on this, I get such cold feet the hospital gave me a hypothermic blanket to cover my feet. A paramedic came to my home and showed me how to use it, its not as straight forward as chucking it over your feet at night blood sugar control is crucial.

Try to make sure they take it seriously and give you a proper check out. If you do have atherosclerosis, it's probably much more important to deal with it rather than just focusing on BG, which with an HbA1c of 48 isn't a very big deal by itself. Good luck!

When I was diagnosed - after much hoo hah with a defunct thyroid I was given a low dose of thyroxine and I can still remember how my hands and feet felt so warm after a few days taking the tablets. It was such a comfortable feeling, like having my hands and feet in bowls of warm water.
I believe it is something which often goes together - though diabetes had never been mentioned prior to diagnosis - I have read it on the internet now I am into things diabetic.
Although it is difficult to diagnose there are things such as having a lower than normal temperature - I thought that our thermometer must have been faulty as I was never 98.4 - always lower or higher - and my eyebrows fell out - they regrew once I got past the first few months of treatment, but dropped out again when I needed the dose increased some years later.

I had cold feet for years but since I've been on Blood pressure and cholesterol tablets my feet are much better. I started these two years after taking metformin.

This is a very old thread - started in 2011, AnnW doesn’t visit the forum any more I’m afraid. 🙂
