Type 2
Hi all, I was diagnosed with type 2 about 4 months ago. It was a shock, despite my mother being type 2 and her mother as well. Since then I am trying very hard. I have cut out most sugars and all alcohol. Still experimenting with diet. I also take 160 mg Gliclazide daily.
Yesterday my reading was 6.6, having gone from 24.5 in June. Feeling happy but the battle isn't over of course.

Sounds like you are doing fine to me already, that is a significant improvement, just remember it is not simply sugar that you need to manage it is carbohydrates in general.
bread, rice, pasta & potatoes are big offenders & usually have a big affect on your BG levels

wholemeal rice & pasta tend not to be so bad & burgen bread is often recommended here.
with your figures I would suggest simply reducing portion size will have a noticeable affect.

Do you have a BG meter? if so testing before & after eating to see which foods are best for you can be of great benefit ( although the NHS don't seem to grasp this). if you dont have one yet the code free meter from Amazon is considered to be on of the best buys as its test strips are the most affordable (£8.00 for 50 compared to £15-£25 for the ones in the chemist) don't forget to tick the VAT exemption box, as a diabetic you are exempt VAT on these items.

Hi Jojo
Sounds like you’ve made a great start! Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like you are doing well

Sounds like you doing ok, but why imediately on glicazide, not a drug that anyone should be on immediately ..

I was put on to Gliclazide immediately on diagnosis, (when it was assumed I was Type 2) because my liver function tests had come back slightly out of kilter, so Metformin wasn’t an option, so it's not unknown. (My initial HbA1c was 16.0 in old money, though.)

Understand that Robin, but not a normal start for any real type 2, "?

Hello and welcome to the forum Jojo catwoman, from a fellow T2.
Yesterday my reading was 6.6, having gone from 24.5 in June.
What sort of test (?) are those numbers from?

Hi all, have I been given the wrong medication? I was told by the practice specialist nurse that what they had given me was designed to work quickly. When the original dose didn't lower my sugars in 2 weeks, she wanted to put me on to insulin. I then asked was there another tablet, or could my current medication be increased. That is where we are now. Tbh, the nurse was unhelpful and quite patronising. I haven't seen her for ages thank God, as she was really depressing me.
Thanks for all your advice, very gratefully received. I have researched Carbs and have as few as possible. Very rarely now do I have any rice or pasta. I use low carb bread and limit that. I know this is a life long condition and I am working hard to keep on top of things. I have also lost almost a stone in weight and would like to lose another stone at least. Having hated exercise for most of my life, I am now trying to keep more active.
I don't test every single day, just most days. I was lucky to be given a test meter by my surgery, when I was diagnosed.
I am worried however about an eye test, I am booked in for soon at the local hospital. They have found some cells that they don't like the look of behind my right eye. My eyesight itself seems fine and I am told it is good for my age.

Sounds like you've made a good start.

Me too.

This makes me think your HbA1c results were pretty hight. Do you know what the results of this test were? Several people on her have posted that they were happy to have been on insulin as it helped them get their levels down.
I'd suggest keeping a food diary along with your BG readings. Take readings before and 1 - 2 hours after eathing. You should start to see a pattern after a couple of weeks.
Yesterday my reading was 6.6, having gone from 24.5 in June.
Was that finger prick tests? Was the 24.5 after eating? That was a particularly high reading.

On diagnosis, it was 17, three days later I was unwell with a trapped nerve in my neck and it was 24.5. Not been that high since thankfully. I had only just started on medication. That was finger prick via the machine. It remained at 12 - 14 for a while. Since losing weight it has come down. I have kept a food diary, which helps.
The 24.5 was after a small bowl of porridge.

Really, you'd need a reading before your porridge to know what effect that had. Some have posted having a good BG level after porridge, others that it's bad. From what I've heard, being unwell can also make you go up. So having a trapped nerve and porridge could of both contributed to the very high figure. Of course, being newly diagnosed you're going to be on the high side.

As you may have noticed, you're BG will vary during the day. Testing before as well as after eating will show you what affect your food has, as well as any changes you make.
Since losing weight it has come down.
🙂 Excellent.

I was. That's why I got a free meter and strips cos of lows. Glad I'm off them, got a cheap meter straightaway though....just because 🙂
