Hello everyone,
Seems the very first piece of advice for prediabetics is Lose Weight... But I am and have always been borderline underweight. Thus have never had to worry about what to eat at all, no diets, just remember to get the fruit and veg in. Its come as a shock. My mother was diagnosed with type 2 around three years ago, and at that point I looked at my diet and did make some changes. Now I rarely eat chocolate, sweets are a very occaisional treat, cakes: well have given up baking completely. Also stepped up on the fruit and veg, and cut down on the alcohol. However it seems this was not enough.
Looked at low GI but that seems to be encouraging fats, and I have slightly raised cholesterol as well, so no bacon and egg breakfast for me.
Went to the doctor for a minor problem, first visit for a couple of years, "you are due these tests, might as well do them while you are here" Couple of weeks later have acquired two health conditions. Dont go to the doctor, they make you sick.

Welcome to the group Liz.... A lot to take in in a short amount of time....

First, I wouldn't fear the fats.... Reading on this forum you will see that many of us emphasize "good fats" i.e. not the refined ones like vegetable, corn, canola etc
Second, contrary to what they will have you believe, most cholesterol is manufactured in the body from.... Carbohydrates.

My results from the time I was eating a cholesterol lowering diet of high carb foods seem to be suspiciously absent from my records, but since diagnosis and going low carb, my cholesterol is a lot better - eating meat with fat, cooking with olive oil or fat, - good ratios, but from what I can see, for me as an older woman, my chances of dying from stroke or heart attack is actually increased if I have lower than average cholesterol.
High cocoa chocolate is fine, it is fairly low carb. Fruit can be high in carbs, so choosing the lower carb ones and eating only small amounts is the better option, but GI seems to be entirely wrong - carbs are carbs - and low or high GI makes little difference for me.

thanks for replying Drummer, and agree about the GI, cant see how it will help when so much of the advice is to "add fat to slow down digestion of carbs" and doc recommended a low fat diet, because of cholestrol levels. Have joined a healthy walking group, but your idea of Morris dancing sounds a lot more fun.

hi Martin, am well aware of cholesterol being created in the body, family history of hypercholesterolaemia, but doc seems to think thats not it.
