I had a diabetic review today (postponed from last week) and irritatingly my HbA1c has gone up to 40 (5.8) from 34 (5.3). I'm not sure why, as I haven't been doing things differently, as far as I recall.... And it took some wrestling to get a proper print out from them - what's the point of a 'result normal, no action needed' which tells me nothing! - but my cholesterol is much the same as last year, so that's good.

I haven't been exercising much since Christmas, partly because of life barging in, but I don't know what else to do to reduce my HbA1c, and I have to go back for another check in 3 months. Any ideas? Less food? Less red wine??

It is disappointing when the HHbA1c test doesn't show the results we've been hoping for...40 is still in non diabetic range and a good figure...that would be why your records are marked 'result normal, no action needed'...since you re out of diabetic range...so while you may be unhappy with the (slight) increase it's still good news...my HbA1c tests are usually a disaster...they never reflect what my meter tells me...you have only risen by .5...if you have reduced your activity that my explain the difference...or if you have increased your alcohol intake it could be that...it could be anything TBH...diabetes is a contrary little madam...sometimes it just happens...that is still a brilliant result despite your disappointment Pine Marten...well done.

Thanks, Bubbsie, I just felt a bit narked - especially as I had to demand a print out several times! ...and I have a urine infection this week, but you don't want to know about that 😱

Oh well, back to the exercise dvds and more walking!

The HbA1c test is often heavily weighted to the last four weeks prior to the test PM...so if you have had an infection that may account for the rise...as for the rise it's tiny...is your surgery geared up for system online...I always check my results online...I thought all surgeries had to offer that service...yes I'd be peed off if I had to ask for my results...particularly several times...ask about the online service...it makes things so much easier...walking & the exercise bike is my activity.

Well done good result wish mine was close to that this

I don't know about it being online, Bubbsie, but I shall check. The usual D nurse I see prints them out for me with no trouble, but she's just gone on maternity leave and I saw the cover nurse - who was very good and thorough actually, so maybe she was still getting used to things.

I had slight raised one too recently. I have taken to weighing out my portions of berries, and reducing my carbs a bit more.

It should be online PM...at our surgery you have to ask them for it...fill in a form...then they give you the details & you set it up...its great...I can see my patient records...make appointments online...order my repeat prescriptions...saves me a lot of time & inconvenience.

Sorry to hear you are disappointed with your HbA1c @Pine Marten :( But I can completely understand your frustrations with having to repeatedly ask for your own test results.

As @Bubbsie says, you may be able to access these electronically depending on what system your surgery have and how they have set it up. By default ours allows repeat prescriptions and appointment booking, which I've used for years and is very convenient. To access the 'medical records' section apparently I need to contact the practice, but I've not bothereed to do that (I just pop down and ask for printouts as they are quite close to me). And some functions on the system (eg messaging) are marked with a red 'x' as not available by my particular practice, so I guess you'd have to ask and see what your lot offers.

Congratulations on that HbA1c though. It's brilliant, even if I know you were disappointed by it.

I'm not sure how much non-D people's A1c's vary, but I suspect they wobble up and down a bit too. Take heart, with an A1c like that you are clearly kicking your diabetes' butt every day 😛

As long as I'm under 42 at my next blood test, I'll be over the moon. Don't worry about it PM. Just keep an eye on things. I need to lower my carbs a bit more as I've been putting on a few pounds recently.

My surgery are still not giving online test results yet, though the last time I asked was told it was been looked into.

I haven't got under 42 yet Mark...I'm not going to sweat on it...I never seem to get below pre-diabetic...every time my HbA1c is due something happens...either an infection...or a dodgy tummy...that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it😉.

That's disappointing grovesy.

Ah! I've just had a look and it says I have to go in person to request online services. I have to take in two *ahem* specimens on Monday for my infection so I shall ask then. Thanks for the suggestion, Bubbsie 🙂

And thanks to all for cheering me up about the result - I know it's not bad, I just felt a bit frustrated by it o_O

I'm amazed you are not below 42 yet. I think your one of them people who holds on to their glucose longer than me.

I hear what you say...... I get so mad at myself when my A1c is not where I think it should be.......................

I would love to be under 80 when I get my results. Here it’s hoping if as bubbsie says it’s weighted for last 4 weeks, my last 3 weeks have shown a mainly steady decrease.

Great result but sorry to hear you're disappointed with it PM.
